DAVIS, Calif. – Junior Anissa Madrid placed third in the balance beam and all-around competitions Friday, helping the Seattle Pacific gymnasts post a season-best team score of 188.550 to finish second behind host UC Davis at The Pavilion.
The Aggies outpointed SPU for the third time this season with a winning score of 194.250. UC Davis swept all four individual event titles and the top-two all-around places.
Madrid, a product of Kennedy High School near Seattle, accumulated 38.00 points in the four events, including a 9.650 on beam. Both of those marks were the peak performances this season for a Falcons gymnast. Madrid also had scores of 9.30 on vault, 9.50 on bars and a season-best 9.55 on floor.
SPU sophomore Kaysha Heck (Edmonds, Wash./Chrysalis HS) registered her season-high score of 9.700 on the uneven bars to place third in that event.
Sophomore Sherah Veron (Broken Arrow, Okla.) was the Falcons’ top finisher on vault, tying for fourth with a score of 9.70. Another sophomore, Brittany Malone (Salinas, Calif.) was the team’s top floor finisher with a sixth-place mark of 9.625. That was a season-best score for Malone, who had a career-high 9.125 on beam.
Katie Yamamura of UC Davis had the highest all-around score (38.825) and tied for top honors on vault (9.75) with teammate Michelle Bobonski.
Tanya Ho was the runner-up in the all-around (38.70) and placed second on bars (9.775) behind another Aggie, Lida Gehlen (9.875).
For the second straight week, Falcons’ sophomore Samantha Taylor (San Carlos, Calif.) compiled a career-best all-around total. She had a fourth-place score of 37.975, including a mark of 9.675 that tied for sixth on bars. Taylor received a 9.325 on vault, 9.40 on floor and season-high 9.575 on beam.
Erika Van Dyke claimed two event titles for UC Davis, winning the beam (9.775) and floor (9.80).
The Falcons combined to record their season-best team scores in two events, including a 46.800 on beam. The bars score of 48.025 was their best point total in any event this season.
SPU junior Laura Willis tied for eighth on bars with a season-high mark of 9.60.
The Seattle Pacific gymnasts continue their stretch of eight straight road meets by traveling to Boise, Idaho next week for a tri-meet with Boise State and Sacramento State.
The next home meet for the Falcons is March 19 against Washington at Brougham Pavilion.
