PORTLAND -- Terra Schumacher has added her name to the list of potential NCAA Division II indoor track participants.
The Seattle Pacific junior, in her first year with the Falcons after transferring from Mount Hood Community College, won the women's pole vault on Sunday in the Pilot Indoor at the University of Portland. Schumacher (Sublimity, Ore.) cleared 11 feet, 6 inches (3.50 meters), meeting the NCAA provisional qualifying standard right on the mark.
Schumacher's previous best as a Falcon was 11-1 in the season-opening UW Indoor Preview on Jan. 16.
On Sunday, Schumacher led a 1-2-3 finish for SPU pole vaulters. Junior Melissa Peaslee (Fox Island, Wash./Gig Harbor HS) was second at 11-0, and sophomore Michaela Caldwell (Marysville, Wash./Marysville-Pilchuck HS) took third with a personal-best 10-6.
Schumacher and Peaslee already were automatic qualifiers for the Great Northwest Athletic Conference championships, set for Feb. 20 in Nampa, Idaho. Caldwell is on the provisional qualifying list.
The Falcons had three other individual winners in Sunday's meet, which was a late addition to the team's schedule.
Sophomore Brittany Aanstad (Lake Stevens, Wash./Lake Stevens HS), won the women's high jump at 5-3¾. She already has gone two inches higher than that to earn NCAA provisional qualifying status.
That event also had SPU athletes in the top three positions. Junior Jacquie Mattson (Odell, Ore.) and freshman Katy Gross (Everett, Wash./Cascade HS) tied for second place at 5-1¾. Both were PRs, Mattson having cleared 5-1 as a freshman and again as a sophomore. Both women already were on the GNAC provisional qual list.
Freshman Nate Seely (Lynden, Wash./Lynden HS) won the men's 800 meters in 1:59.63. That put him on the provisional qualifying list for GNACs.
Freshman Kelsey Brown (Colorado Springs, Colo.) helped make it an 800 sweep for Seattle Pacific, as she won the women's race in 2:26.97. Fellow Falcon freshman Athena Alvarez (Vancouver, Wash./Columbia River HS) was second in 2:30.46.
Sophomore Natty Plunkett (Bellevue, Wash./Newport HS) was second in the women's 3,000 meters in 10:27.93. While the 3,000 no longer is an official postseason event, it serves as a qualifying race for the GNAC 5,000 meters. Since Plunkett's time was well under what would have been the GNAC automatic qualifying standard of 10:45.30 for the 3K, it earned her a spot in the 5K for the conference meet.
The Falcons return to action this coming weekend at Dempsey Indoor on the University of Washington campus. The Husky Classic is set for Friday, Feb. 12, starting at 6 p.m. and Saturday, Feb. 13, with running events starting at 8:30 a.m. and field events at 10 a.m. The UW Indoor Open is Sunday starting at 8 a.m. Those will be the last meets prior to GNACs.
