17 Soccer Players are All-GNAC Academic

SPU boasts largest contingent among the league's soccer squads

SPOKANE, Wash. -- Seventeen student-athletes from the Seattle Pacific men's and women's soccer teams that both participated in the postseason were named to the 2011 Great Northwest Athletic Conference Academic All-Star team.

Comprised of nine men and eight women, the Falcons' contingent was the largest of any school in the league.

SPU sophomore Blaine Carver, a business administration major from Soldotna, Ak., compiled a 3.94 grade point average that was the second-highest among all of the league's men's soccer players. He headed a list of nine SPU men that formed the biggest group of any school in the conference.

Senior Drew Williams made his third appearance on the GNAC academic squad. The psychology major from Bend, Ore. has a 3.58 GPA.

The other Falcons named to the men's academic team were: Anthony Mohammed (3.54), Caleb Nyone (3.53) Christopher Morris (3.53), Tyler Schultz (3.48), Kodiac Gamble (3.27), Brandon Kuenzi (3.26) and Danny Brill (3.25). Schultz was the 2011 GNAC and West Region Player of the Year.

The SPU men posted a 14-4-2 record and qualified for the NCAA Division II Tournament for the first time since 2006. They notched a 2-1 overtime win over Cal State Dominguez Hills in the first round before losing 3-2 to Cal State L.A. in the West Region championship game.

Boasting the best GPA among the eight SPU women was senior Kelsey Jenkins, the 2011 GNAC Player of the Year for women's soccer. She is a political science major from Kent, Wash. (Kentwood HS) with a 3.94 GPA.

Jenkins was named to the academic team for the third straight season, as was senior teammate Janie Wurth, a nursing major with a 3.54 GPA.

The other Falcons on the women's academic team were Natalie Harold (3.48), Kellie Zakrzewski (3.48), Mackenzie Laird (3.44), Mandy Verdoia (3.40), Brittany Langdon (3.29) and Andrea Chan (3.26).

Seattle Pacific (17-3) won its third consecutive women's soccer conference championship and qualified for the playoffs for the ninth straight season. SPU posted a 4-0 opening-round victory over Grand Canyon before losing 2-1 to Cal State L.A. in the West Region semifinal.

A total of 72 student-athletes – 44 women and 28 men - were named to the GNAC Soccer Academic teams. To be eligible for the academic team, student-athletes were required to have a minimum grade point average of 3.20 and be in at least their second year of competition at the university.
