SEATTLE – Ray Zoellick already has a Great Northwest Athletic Conference outdoor pole vault title. On Sunday, he showed that he wants to go after the indoor version, as well.

The Seattle Pacific senior cleared 14 feet, 11 inches on his first try, tying the school indoor record and his own personal best, as well, to tie for eighth place at the UW Indoor Open.

The meet at Dempsey Indoor on the University of Washington campus was the final warm-up for Zoellick (Bothell, Wash./Cedar Park Christian HS) prior to next weekend's conference championships in Nampa, Idaho.

Zoellick shares the SPU indoor record with Chris Randolph, who cleared it in 2006. Zoellick went over the bar at that height last season. His 2012 best was 14-9 ½ at the season-opening UW Indoor Preview on Jan. 14 at Dempsey. His outdoor best also is 14-11.

But Zoellick clearly has people to beat if he wants to win it all next Saturday in Nampa. Among the seven vaulters who finished ahead of him on Sunday were two GNAC counterparts. Cal Rosenberg of Western Washington and Tim Lundy of Western Oregon both soared 15-5 to tie for fourth place. Sunday's winner was former WWU star Ryan Brown at 16-10 ¾.

Junior distance runner Seth Pierson (Cashmere, Wash./Cashmere HS) added his name to a second GNAC automatic qualifying list with a speedy run in the 800 meters. Pierson, in his first 800 for the Falcons, won his heat by going the distance in 1 minute, 53.73 seconds. That was just 13 hundredths shy of an NCAA Division II provisional qualifying time.

If Pierson decides to enter the 800 next weekend (he also is an automatic qualifier in the mile), it could set up a scintillating race between two Seattle Pacific runners and two from Western Oregon. Ryan Hanson of the Wolves has the GNAC's top time of 1:52.32 followed by two-time defending champion Nate Seely (Lynden, Wash./Lynden HS) of SPU at 1:52.36. Then it's Pierson, followed by Western Oregon's Chris Olsen (1:53.99).

A total of three other Seattle Pacific men moved onto conference provisional qualifying lists: freshman Alex Horton (Kent, Wash./Kentridge HS) in the 800 at 1:56.77; junior AJ Baker (Au Gres, Mich.0 in the mile at 4:25.09; and junior Gavin Brand (Suwanee, Ga.) in the 3,000 at 9:06.48. Freshman David Ferguson (Inverness, Ill., 23.02 in the 200) and junior Nate Johnson (Boise, Idaho, 9.04 in the 60-meter hurdles) made provisional times, but already were on those respective lists with faster marks.

HURDLERS SHINE FOR SPU WOMEN
The Falcons could have quite a women's hurdles crew at conference next weekend.

With NCAA provisional qualifier Ali Worthen already assured of a spot in the 60-meter race, teammates Terra Schumacher and Maliea Luquin joined her on that automatic list with fast runs on Sunday.

Worthen (Coos Bay, Ore.) broke the 9-second barrier once again, finishing seventh in 8.95. Fellow senior Schumacher (Sublimity, Ore.), in her first hurdles race of the winter clocked a 9.17 to take 28th overall. Falcons freshman Luquin (Portland, Ore.) was right behind her in 9.20 seconds. That was the first automatic time for Luquin, who took a sizable drop from her previous best of 9.56.

Schumacher's automatic mark gives her two guaranteed tickets to Nampa. She already had one in the pole vault at 11-0 ¾, and came within half an inch of that on Sunday at 11-0 ¼ to tie for ninth place.

Sophomore Kishia Mitchell (Puyallup, Wash./Rogers HS) tied her career best of 7.91 seconds for 12th place in the 60-meter dash. She already was on the GNAC automatic list with that same mark (the seventh-fastest in conference history), and remains just 16 hundredths of a second away from the NCAA provisional standard.

Seattle Pacific had several new provisional qualifying marks. That included a career best of 25.90 in the 200 by senior Myisha Valentine (Mountlake Terrace, Wash./North Sound Christian HS). That was nearly a full second better than her previous best of 26.89. Valentine finished 21st overall.

Freshman Tasia Baldwin (Tacoma, Wash./Foss HS) set a pair of PRs: 8.05 in the 60 and 25.92 in the 200. Sophomore BryAnne Wochnick (Portland, Ore.) joined the 200 provisional list with a PR of 26.47; junior Emily Quatier (Portland, Ore.) made provisional at 26.50, and Worthen made provisional at 25.85.

Freshman Jasmine Johnson (Federal Way, Wash.) and sophomore McKayla Fricker (Canby, Ore.) don't normally run the 400, but both ran it in fast fashion on Sunday in 59.11 and 59.21, respectively, to make GNAC provisional. Seniors Heidi Laabs-Johnson (Salt Lake City, 5:09.51) and Josie Becker (Grapeview, Wash./White River HS, 5:25.10) both ran lifetime bests in the mile to get onto the provisional list. Sophomore Alli Cutting made her season debut, running 10:48.00 in her first ever 3,000. That's the third-fastest time in the GNAC.
