SEATTLE – Terra Schumacher and McKayla Fricker made the most of their last chance. Now, all they can do is wait to see if they're in the NCAA Division II indoor track and field championships.

Seattle Pacific senior Schumacher and sophomore Fricker moved into the national top 12 on Saturday with strong performances in the pole vault and 800 meters, respectively, in the Seattle Pacific Last Chance meet at Dempsey Indoor.

Terra Schumacher 2011
Schumacher (Sublimity, Ore.) soared to career-best height of 12 feet, 3½ inches in competition on the University of Washington campus. That was nearly six inches better than her previous personal best of 11-9 ¾, which she cleared last weekend in a third-place finish at the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Championships.

It was Schumacher's first time above 12 feet indoors (she has gone 12-2 ¾ outdoors) and put her into a tie for 10th place on the NCAA Division II list, pending the outcome of other meets this weekend.

Fricker (Canby, Ore) climbed up to No. 12 in the 800 with an astounding run of 2 minutes, 12.67 seconds. That was nearly three full seconds better than the PR of 2:15.53 that she ran in winning the GNAC title last Saturday in Nampa, Idaho.

Freshman Jasmine Johnson (Federal Way, Wash./Federal Way HS) ran her way onto the provisional list with a 2:15.30.

The NCAA typically takes 12 competitors per event. That can vary by one or two athletes, depending on the event, how closely they're bunched around the cutoff line, and how many also might be entered in another event, thus opening a spot for someone who isn't qualified elsewhere.

Nationals are set for March 8-10 in Mankato, Minn.

Seth Pierson mug 2011
SPU junior Seth Pierson (Cashmere, Wash./Cashmere HS) also came up big in the men's meet. Pierson, who effectively has used a late kick time after time during the indoor season, did it again on Saturday and finished the mile in 4:09.83, way faster than his GNAC winning time of 4:13.27 from a week ago. That put him into No. 17 on the national list.

Also on the NCAA bubble for Seattle Pacific is junior Katy Gross (Everett, Wash./Cascade HS). She currently ranks No. 14 in the women's pentathlon.

Virtually assured of a spot is senior pentathlete Ali Worthen (Coos Bay, Ore.). She is seventh in the pentathlon standings with 3,729 points, well above the cutoff line.

The qualifying list is expected to be finalized early in the coming week.
