CHICO, Calif. – It's only the first of March, and Ali Worthen already is almost right back to where she was at the end of last May.

Not a bad place to be.

The Seattle Pacific redshirt senior won two more events on Friday, and finished with six out of the seven to run away with the women's heptathlon title at the Chico Multi-Event Classic.

Worthen (Coos Bay, Ore.) piled up 5,243 points, winning by more than 700 ahead of second-place Robin Hannah of Chico State. Hannah had 4,482.

That also was an automatic qualifying total  for the NCAA Division II Championships, beating the minimum of 5,200.

Worthen was just 54 points shy of her bronze-medal score of 5,297 at last year's NCAAs. It was 44 points more than the 5,199 she tallied in taking her second consecutive Great Northwest Athletic Conference heptathlon crown last April 30 and May 1.

“I'm really excited that I've gotten automatic this early in the season,” Worthen said. “It was definitely a goal to get that in this meet. I'm sitting really well, and now, I can just get back to training. I don't have to obsess over marks.”

The Falcon star already was in fine position heading into the second day of the two-day event at University Stadium. On Thursday, Worthen won all four events – the 100-meter hurdles, high jump, shot put, and 200-meter dash, and had 3,068 points. That left her 355 in front of Hannah.

She came back Friday morning and picked up right where she left off. Worthen flew 19 feet, 1 ½ inches in the long jump, winning that event by more than a foot. Worthen then threw the javelin 113 feet, 5 ½ inches.

That left just the 800 meters, and Worthen ran it in a personal-best 2 minutes, 20.78 seconds. That easily beat her old mark of 2:22.04 from last year's GNACs. The only thing that time didn't do was win the race. Kira Rienecker of UC Davis was slightly faster at 2:20.13.

“I was so close (to winning) that seventh one,” Worthen said.

Worthen was particularly happy with her long jump mark on Friday.

“I've been slowly improving on that,” she said. “I've been struggling with my timing, and today, it was just there. That's exactly what I wanted to do with that.

“For the long jump and the meet as a while, it's just a huge confidence boost. I'm feeling really hopeful and feeling good.”

MEN'S DECATHLON
Nate Johnson 2011
SPU senior Nate Johnson finished 10th in the men's decathlon at Chico. Johnson (Boise, Idaho) totaled 5,368 points. First-day leader J.P. Smith of Chico State hung on to win by a scant 25 points ahead of teammate Theodore Elesnbaumer, 7,035-7,010.

Johnson's top event of the day by far was the javelin. He threw it 169 feet, 5 ½ inches to finish second with 613 points. Chico's Smith won at 171-1.

Johnson also had marks of 16.97 seconds in the 110-meter hurdles, 113 feet, 3 inches in the discus, and 5:18.23 in the 1,500 meters. However, he did not clear his first height in the pole vault, so did not score in that event.
