EUGENE, Ore. – Just one week ago,
McKayla Fricker and
Lynelle Decker were racing in the NCAA indoor track and field championship meet.
On Saturday, the two Seattle Pacific standouts gave themselves a chance to run in the outdoor nationals – and come Monday morning, Fricker just might have the fastest time in all of Division II.
The Falcon junior, coming off an All-American fourth-place finish in the indoor 800 meters, left the competition and her outdoor personal record way behind, zipping through two laps around the oval at Historic Hayward Field in 2 minutes, 9.90 seconds to earn a spot on the provisional qualifying list for May's NCAA Division II meet.
That time was atop the D-2 national list as of Saturday night, pending the outcome of other meets around the country this weekend.
At the finish line, Fricker was more than two seconds in front of Oregon's Megan Patrignelli, who clocked 2:12.14. Fricker's previous best outdoor time as a Falcon was 2:11.57 last April 21 at the Beach Invitational in Norwalk, Calif. Last Saturday in Birmingham, Ala., she set an indoor PR of 2:10.76.
But Fricker wasn't the only Falcon with fleet feet.
Freshman teammate Decker (Vancouver, Wash. / Mountain View HS), who placed 15
th in the indoor 800 last week, came through in 2:12.56. That easily beat the NCAA provisional standard of 2:14.40 and was No. 3 nationally as of Saturday evening.
All in all, Seattle Pacific enjoyed a solid day at Hayward, winning four women's events altogether.
Ali Worthen factored into three of them. The redshirt senior flew farther than all other competitors in the long jump, then ran a leg on the victorious 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams.
Worthen (Coos Bay, Ore.) went 18 feet, 7 ¼ inches in the long, putting herself onto the automatic qualifying list for the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Championships and coming within an inch of making NCAA provisional.
She later led off the 4x400 relay, teaming with senior
Emily Quatier (Portland, Ore.), Decker and Fricker for a winning time of 3 minutes, 53.65 seconds.
SPU's team of junior
BryAnne Wochnick (Portland, Ore.), Worthen, sophomore
Tasia Baldwin (Tacoma, Wash. / Foss HS) and junior
Kishia Mitchell (Puyallup, Wash. / Rogers HS) won the 4x100 in 47.92 seconds.
The Falcons had just five men competing, but two of them came up with notable performances.
Senior Ryan Endresen (Portland, Ore.) placed second in the 400-meter hurdles in 54.42 seconds. That was more than half a second better than his season-opening time of 55.06 at the UPS Outdoor Preview on March 2 – a time which already was fast enough to make him a GNAC automatic qualifier.
Senior AJ Baker (AuGres, Mich.) was second in the 2,000-meter steeplechase in 6:00.01. That's 1,000 meters shorter than the standard distance, but Baker's time was nearly 14 seconds faster than his 18th-place mark of 6:13.70 in last year's Oregon Preview.
The Falcons are off next weekend, and will return to the track on Saturday, March 30, in the Club Northwest Spring Break Open at West Seattle Stadium.
