CORVALLIS, Ore. –
Kishia Mitchell keeps going faster. And
Madi Webster keeps going higher.
Mitchell set a personal-best time in winning the 400 meters and Webster added six inches to her PR in the pole vault on Saturday to highlight Seattle Pacific's performances at the Oregon State Invitational outdoor track and field meet.
Falcons senior Mitchell (Puyallup, Wash. / Rogers HS) stopped the watch in 57.09 seconds in the 400. That beat her previous best time of 57.37, which she set as a freshman in 2011, and made her an automatic qualifier for the Great Northwest Athletic Conference championship meet.
That wasn't Mitchell's only victory of the day. She ran the second leg on the victorious 4x100 relay that came across the line in 47.43 seconds. Mitchell took the baton from leadoff runner
BryAnne Wochnick (Portland, Ore.), then handed it to freshman
Kyra Brannan (Kennewick, Wash. / Kamiakin HS). Junior
Tasia Baldwin (Tacoma, Wash. / Foss HS) brought it home.
Mitchell also made a GNAC provisional qualifying time in the 100-meter dash at 12.43, giving her fourth place, and ran on the second-place 4x400 relay.
SPU sophomore Webster (Colorado Springs, Colo.) went over the pole vault bar at 10 feet, 8 inches. It was just last Saturday at the UPS Outdoor Preview in Tacoma that she topped 10 feet for the first time, going 10-2, making it on her final attempt. She then took three tries at 10-8, but was unable to clear.
Baldwin also set a PR in the 400 on Saturday, taking third place in 58.79. That beat her previous best of 58.95 from last April.
Sophomore distance runner
Anna Patti (Renton, Wash. / Lindbergh HS) whacked 14 seconds off of her personal best in the 1,500 meters. Patti took third place in 4:45.38, well below her best freshman year clocking of 4:59.89.
STRAKER HAS BIG DAY
Sprint success for the Falcons wasn't limited to the women's meet, however. SPU junior RJ Straker enjoyed some of his own in the men's meet.
For the second week in a row, Straker (Pasadena, Calif.) set a personal best in the 400 meters. His time of 52.07 bettered the 52.48 he posted last Saturday at UPS. He came into the season never having gone faster than 53.34 in a Seattle Pacific uniform.
Straker also tied his PR in the 100, finishing in 11.58.
Sophomore Adam Avischious (Colorado Springs, Colo.) broke two minutes in the 800 for the first time as a Falcon, crossing in 1:57.56.
Seattle Pacific will not have an outdoor meet next week while attention shifts to the NCAA Division II indoor championships in Winston-Salem, N.C. Falcon senior
McKayla Fricker (Canby, Ore.) and sophomore
Lynelle Decker (Vancouver, Wash. / Mountain View HS) both will compete in the 800 meters, with preliminaries on Friday and the finals on Saturday.
Fricker is the No. 4 seed, but the top four are bunched within one second of each other. She has back-to-back All-American finishes, placing fifth as a sophomore, and fourth as a junior. Decker is in the meet for the second straight year, and is the No. 12 seed.
SPU will resume the outdoor season on Saturday, March 22, at the Oregon Preview in Eugene.
