PORTLAND, Ore. –
McKayla Fricker keeps getting faster – and keeps picking up Great Northwest Athletic Conference awards in the process.
The Seattle Pacific senior, whose 2:06.85 in the 800 meters at last week's Mt. SAC Relays shattered her personal best and was the fifth-fastest mark in conference history, has been named the GNAC women's Track Athlete of the Week.
Fricker (Canby, Ore.) was already an automatic qualifier for the NCAA Division II nationals by virtue of the 2:08.00 she ran on March 22 at the Oregon Preview. Last Friday's race in Walnut, Calif., left that time way behind.
It also kept Fricker in the No. 3 spot on the national list behind Shawnee Carnett of Concord (W.V., 2:06.19) and Chante Roberts of Adams State (Colo., 2:06.35). They also were at Mt. SAC and ran in the heat prior to Fricker, but neither of their times matched hers on Friday. Carnett went 2:08.32; Roberts clocked 2:09.53.
Less than 24 hours after doing that, Fricker went and set a PR and NCAA provisional qualifying time in the 1,500 at the Beach Invitational in Norwalk, Calif. She came across the line in 4:32.35. That beat her previous best of 4:35.30 in last year's GNAC Championships.
Fricker also has an NCAA provisional time in the 400 (55.95) and is the anchor on Seattle Pacific's NCAA provisional-qualifying 4x400 relay.
This is Fricker's second Athlete of the Week award for this outdoor season, and her third overall outdoors. She also won it once for indoors and once for cross country this school year.
The Falcons head to Bellingham on Saturday for the Ralph Vernacchia Invitational. Field events begin at 9:30 a.m., and running starts at 10.
