Women's and men's results (PDF) BURNABY, B.C. –
Michaela Farner has been working and waiting … working and waiting … working and waiting.
The Seattle Pacific senior is still working.
But she's no longer waiting.
Farner let fly with her best-ever javelin throw on Saturday afternoon, flinging it 135 feet, 4 inches at the Emilie Mondor Invitational track and field meet, to put herself onto the NCAA Division II provisional qualifying list and take down a career-best that has stood since 2012.
The previous personal best for Farner was 134-3, set at the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Championships during her freshman year.
"It's about time. It's been what – three years coming? – so I'm really happy about it," said Farner, who was second in the meet behind Christine Ausman of the University of British Columbia (139-4). "It wasn't the best throw, but it got me there. It felt good, but it felt like it could be correct, so I have room for improvement."
Farner has a game plan in place for that improvement. Matter of fact, it's a plan already in progress.
"We've been working on little things for me, like keeping my arm just high enough and making sure it's steady the entire run, and turning my foot in coming to the final crossover," she said. "I put them together just right today.
Since that freshman year performance, Farner (Molalla, Ore.) has worked her way back from major elbow surgery (that between her sophomore and junior seasons). In 2014, she threw 133-7 in the Club Northwest Spring Break Open at the end of March, but didn't touch 130 again for the rest of the way.
Farner started this spring with a 129-10 at the UPS Outdoor Preview on March 7 in Tacoma, dipped into the low 120s for two consecutive meets, then hit 130-1 in last Saturday's JD Shotwell Invitational at UPS.
She has no intention of stopping at 135-4 – or 41.24 meters, for those counting in metric.
"I want to hit 45 meters (147 feet, 8 inches) this year, if nothing else," Farner said. "That (45) has been in front of my eyes my entire life. I want 45 meters."
BECCA'S BIG DAY: 2 WINS, MEET RECORDWith the indoor season capped by a trip to the NCAA meet a now month behind her, Falcons freshman
Becca Houk clearly is getting into her outdoor groove.
Houk set a meet record in the 200-meter dash, and also won the 100 meters on Saturday in Burnaby. She powered across the 200 finish line in 25.05 seconds, beating the old mark of 25.41 set by Jane Channel of Simon Fraser in 2010. It also was more than a quarter-second faster than Houk's PR of 25.33, set just last week at the JD Shotwell Invitational.
Earlier, Houk (Oregon City, Ore.) won the 100 in 12.41, not quite at her PR of 12.23 from last week's Shotwell.
"I didn't expect my results in the 100 to be the way they were. So I just used that to drive me to do faster in the 200. I was pretty happy with the 200 – it felt pretty fast. The wind, I definitely could feel it, but my time was pretty good for outdoor season so far."
Houk will run both races next week when the Falcons head to California for the Bryan Clay Invitational on Friday and the Beach Invitational on Saturday.
"I'm ready to go down to California where it'll be a little warmer, and I think I'll run a lot better," she said.
DECKER, LONG HURDLERS SHINE, TOOFalcons junior
Lynelle Decker put her name on the NCAA provisional qualifying list in the 1,500. Decker finished fourth in 4 minutes, 33.79 seconds, fast enough to beat the standard of 4:34.73. She had gone 4:35.95 three weeks ago at the Rose City Preview in Gresham, Ore.
Decker already is a national qualifier in the 800. Her time of 2:10.64, posted last week at the San Francisco State Distance Carnival, ranks No. 8 in the country heading into this weekend.
Maddi Hommes
Maliea Luquin Sophomore
Maddi Hommes and junior
Maliea Luquin both delivered speedy performances in the 400-meter hurdles. Hommes (Lynden, Wash. / Lynden HS) ran a personal-best time of 1:03.79. That beat her old PR of 1:04.38, set last May 3 at the Saint Martin's Invitational. Saturday's clocking was fast enough for second place, trailing only Anastasia Pearse of Trinity Western (1:02.80).
Luquin (Portland, Ore.) recorded a season-best 1:04.03. That was just five-hundredths shy of her 1:03.98 PR, set at the GNAC Championships in 2013.
Both times were GNAC automatic qualifying.
Sammi Markham won the shot put at 39-0 ½.
DOUBLE PR FOR HARRISFreshman Peyton Harris recorded personal bests in both of his events, finishing second in the long jump and sixth in the 110-meter hurdles.
Peyton Harris Harris (Boise, Idaho) went 21-6 in the long, making himself a GNAC provisional qualifier. It topped his college PR of 21-0 ¾ set last Saturday in Tacoma. His hurdles time was 16.22, beating his old mark of 16.39 from March 7.
Junior Adam Avischious was Seattle Pacific's top placer on the men's side, finishing second in the 1,500 meters. Avischious (Colorado Springs, Colo.) hit the wire in 4:01.52.
Freshman Chris Moreton (Everett, Wash. / Kamiak HS) had a pair of thirds, going 22.97 in the 200 and 50.29 in the 400. The latter was a drop of more than a full second from his outdoor PR of 51.47.
