BURNABY, B.C. –
Lani Taylor ran a season-best time to win the 400-meter dash, and
Kyra Brannan won the long jump for Seattle Pacific on Saturday at the Emilie Mondor Invitational track and field meet.
Falcons freshman Taylor (Seattle / West Seattle) picked up her first college event victory, stopping the watch in 56.76 seconds at Terry Fox Field. That beat her previous best time of 57.18, set on March 18 at the Hornet Invitational in Sacramento.
Brannan (Kennewick, Wash. / Kamiakin HS) went 16 feet, 9 ¼ inches to take the long jump. That was her second victory of the spring. Brannan nabbed first place in the 100-meter dash last Saturday at the JD Shotwell Invitational in Tacoma.
Lani Taylor
Taylor also posted a season-best time of 25.96 in the 200 meters, taking eighth place. Brannan, running that race for the first time this year, was fifth in 25.76.
The women's 1,500 meters had been pegged as potentially one of the top events for Saturday's meet, with the possibility of having seven of the top eight and 10 of the top 11 Great Northwest Athletic Conference performers. But just four from that group, including SPU junior
Mary Charleson (Mill Creek, Wash. / Henry M. Jackson HS) and freshman
Kate Lilly (Renton, Wash. / Hazen HS) wound up in the race.
Kirsten Lee, competing unattached, won in 4 minutes, 37.12 seconds. Charleson, currently No. 7 on the GNAC list, finished third in 4:41.62, and Lilly, ranking No. 8 in the conference, was seventh in 4:53.30. Of the other two top GNAC entrants, Miryam Bassett of Simon Fraser (ranked No. 5) was second in 4:41.23, and Clan teammate Paige Nock (No. 4) finished 10th in 4:54.69.
Seattle Pacific freshmen Shayne Carpenter, Lazarus Scarbrough, and Christian Wong each had a career-best performance: Carpenter in the 200 (24.15, previous 24.37), Scarbrough in the 400 (52.81, previous 52.97), and Wong in the 200 (25.05, previous 25.09).
Freshman
Katherine Walter PR'd in the women's 1500 with a 5:00.17 (previous 5:00.84).
A select group of Falcons will head to Southern California for two meets next weekend. The
Bryan Clay Invitational is set for Thursday and Friday in Azusa, Calif. The
Beach Invitational is next Saturday in Long Beach.
