SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Not even a week had passed since Scout Cai made a splash at the NCAA indoor track and field nationals.

Now, she has put her name on the list for at least a chance to make the outdoor nationals.

The Seattle Pacific sophomore placed third in one event, fourth in three others, and took second place overall in the women's heptathlon at the Sacramento State Hornet Invitational. Cai's total for the Friday-Saturday competition at Hornet Stadium was 4,710 points. That put her ahead of everyone except Academy of Art junior Hannah Hensley, who totaled 4,910.

With that score, Cai easily beat the NCAA Division II provisional qualifying standard of 4,475. Her personal best is 4,894 from last year's Great Northwest Athletic Conference Championships. To make the final cut for nationals, she likely will need at least that and possibly more by the end of this year's GNACs.

Coming off an All-American fifth-place finish in the pentathlon last Saturday at the indoor nationals in Pittsburg, Kansas, Cai began this weekend by placing 16th in the 100-meter hurdles and tying for eighth in the high jump. But she then jumped up to fourth in the shot put, her mark of 33-3 ¾ (10.15 meters) coming within a quarter inch (one centimeter) of her 33-4 / 10.16-meter PR.

Cai finished Day 1 with a fourth-place finish in the 200-meter dash (26.38). That left her third overall with 2,721 points.

An eighth-place finish in the long jump to start Saturday, was followed by a fourth in the javelin (117 feet, 2 inches) and a third in the meet-ending 800 meters (2:23.37).

Kellie May
Falcons freshman Kellie May checked in eighth among the 17 who completed all seven events. May totaled 4,164 points. She was fifth in Friday's shot put (31-8 ½) and tied for fifth in Saturday's long jump (17-4 ¾).

May set a personal-best in the high jump, clearing 4-10½  on Friday. That topped her previous best of 4-6¾ from last week's PLU Open.

Renick Meyer
For freshman Renick Meyer, it was a bittersweet kind of a weekend. Meyer started strong on Friday, placing third in the 100-meter hurdles in 14.80, her college debut in that event. As of Saturday evening, that makes her one of just two GNAC athletes in the 14's this season.

But as Meyer moved on to the high jump, it was not her day. She did not clear the opening height of 4-4 ¾, leaving her with no points in that event.

Meyer bounced right back to finish sixth in the shot put, then capped off Friday by winning the 200-meter dash portion of the hep in a GNAC-leading time of 25.15 seconds. She kept it going on Saturday by tying for second in the long jump (17-8), then placing ninth in the javelin with a five-inch PR of 102-8, and ninth in the 800 meters.

AND THAT'S NOT ALL
-- Meyer's triumph in the heptathlon 200 was her second event win of the season and seventh overall for SPU. She also won the 100-meter dash at the Ed Boitano Invitational on March 3.

7721
Lani Taylor
--Sophomore Lani Taylor joined the Falcons' list of GNAC automatic qualifiers on Saturday, clocking 56.71 seconds for fifth place in the 400-meter dash. Taylor was in her first outdoor meet of the year, having run the 400-meter leg on the distance medley relay that placed an All-American fifth at last weekend's NCAA indoor meet.

UP NEXT
The Falcons will be home for the third Doris Heritage Track Festival next Saturday. Competition at West Seattle Stadium begins with the javelin at 10 a.m. The first race on the track is at 12 noon. In addition to the meet, SPU will salute its 10 seniors with a Senior Day ceremony midway through the day.
