BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Tally up another close call for
Kate Lilly. Only this time …
… she finished on the right side of it.
Lilly and
Scout Cai both posted NCAA Division II provisional qualifying marks, and
Renick Meyer factored into four victories on Friday, helping the Seattle Pacific women take third place in the Western Washington Team Invitational track and field meet.
The Falcons racked up 152 points in the four-way meet at Civic Stadium. Western Washington edged British Columbia for first place, 180-173, and Saint Martin's was fourth with 61.
SPU sophomore Lilly (Renton, Wash. / Hazen HS) earned her first-ever individual NCAA time, finishing the 1500 meters in 4 minutes, 33.34 seconds. That was just under the standard of 4:33.86 and gave her fourth place in the meet behind a UBC trio.
It also was a PR for Lilly, bettering her old one of 4:34.60 from the Oregon State High Performance meet last April 28 in Corvallis – a time that was six-tenths of a second shy of making provisional.
"It feels great. I barely missed it two times last year (Lilly also had a 4:34.65 in 2017), so it feels good to come into the season and get it done," she said. "It felt strong, and it was fun."
Lilly, a first-time All-American award last month when she ran the leadoff leg on Seattle Pacific's distance medley relay team at NCAA indoors, looked as strong on the last lap Friday afternoon as she did on the first one.
"It felt like I still had a little left, so I was just going to go," she said.
Fellow sophomore Cai (Colfax, Wash. / Colfax HS) cleared 12 feet, ½ inch in the pole vault, taking second place. That bettered the provisional mark of 11-11¼. and gave Cai her second provisional of the season. (Her earlier one was in the heptathlon.) It was Cai's first outdoor clearance of 12 feet in college, although she did it multiple times during her senior year at Colfax in 2016, including a personal-best 12-4 to win the Class 1A (small school) state championship.
Cai's collegiate best is an indoor mark of 12-4¾ that was good for the Great Northwest Athletic Conference crown in February, and eventually helped her earn a place in the D2 nationals. Her previous outdoor best at SPU was 11-10½ last April.
In addition to the pole vault, Cai was entered in the high jump and long jump, all of which were bunched fairly close together on the meet schedule. So she had to make a choice.
"Pole vault was first," she replied when asked why she picked that one. "It was nice not to do those others so I could do pole vault."
Renick Meyer
Meyer (Gresham, Ore.) won a pair of individual events and led off both of Seattle Pacific's victorious relays. She went 18 feet, 8¼ inches on her second long jump attempt of the day, wiping out her previous PR by a full eight inches, and taking the GNAC lead in that event.
After that jump, she immediately changed into her track shoes and ran the first leg on the 4x100 relay, followed by freshman
Julia Stepper, senior
Becca Houk, and sophomore
Grace Bley. The result was a win and a season-best time of 47.09, faster than the 47.41 that same foursome posted last Friday at the UBC Open in Vancouver.
Meyer later won the 100-meter hurdles in 14.81, and finished her day by leading off the 4x400 relay. With Houk, Bley, and sophomore
Lani Taylor subsequently carrying the baton, the Falcons won it and finished in a season-best 3:52.64.
"I love the relays just because it's more of a team aspect and everybody needs to do well," Meyer said. "The 4-by-1 is really new for me because I've only ever run straightaways, so I'm just trying to figure that out. The leadoff for the 4-by-4 is definitely hard. It's not my normal race, but it's not too crazy – not as bad as the 800. I'm just trying to run my hardest for my team members because they're trying to get a good time."
AND THAT'S NOT ALL
-- SPU swept the sprints, with Stepper and Houk going 1-2 in the 100, Bley taking the 200, and Taylor finishing first in the 400.
-- Speaking of 1-2 finishes, the women's long jump also ended that way in the Falcons' favor, as freshman
Kellie May (Irvine, Calif.) was second behind Meyer with a career-best leap of 18-1. Her previous best was 17-5½ last week in Vancouver. That was her first 18-foot outdoor jump for the Falcons. She had a pair of 18-footers indoor, with a best of 18-3 ¼ for fourth place at GNAC.
-- Sophomore
Katherine Walter whacked 20 seconds off her 5000-meter PR, finishing second in 17:38.85. Her previous best was 17:58.73 on March 17 in Sacramento at the Hornet Invitational.
Davis Flintoff
-- Freshman
Davis Flintoff had the best individual finish for the Falcons in the men's meet, as SPU was fourth in the team standings with 81 points Flintoff (Vancouver, Wash. / Skyview HS) flew a personal-best 13 feet, 8¼ inches, an inch higher than his previous PR.
-- Seattle Pacific posted a second-place finish in the men's 4x800 relay with senior
Ben Halladay, freshman
Ben Hansen, junior
Jesse Phan, and senior
Brysten James. It was James who brought the Falcon from behind on the anchor leg, moving up from third place.
UP NEXT
Both SPU teams return to action next Saturday in the
Jay Hammer Meet at Saint Martin's in Lacey. Field events start at 10:00 a.m., with track races beginning at 10:30.
