SEATTLE – Last time Jessica Pixler ran the mile at Dempsey Indoor, she set the Seattle Pacific record, but didn't get the victory.

This time, the Falcon senior got both – and after battling an illness for the past couple weeks, she wasn't even sure she was going to run when she got up on Saturday morning.

Pixler (Sammamish, Wash./Eastlake HS) shattered her own SPU and Great Northwest Athletic Conference mark by more than four seconds on, cruising around oval in 4 minutes, 33.46 seconds on the way to an 11-second win at the UW Invitational indoor track meet.

Pixler's time beat the 4:37.83 she ran last Feb.14 in the Husky Classic. The winning time that day was 4:37.07, as the top four runners were bunched within one second of each other.

This time, nobody was close, as second-place Julia Howard of the Valley Royals came across in 4:44.68.

“I've had shingles the past couple weeks, so I wasn't quite sure whether it was a good idea to run or not,” Pixler said. “My plan was to see how I felt running on Friday and how I felt this morning. I still wasn't completely sure, but I said I was just going to go for it. It was only a mile, and if I had a bad race, there wouldn't be too much suffering.”

Pixler's performance was far from a bad race. Her time was well below the NCAA Division II indoor automatic qualifying standard of 4:54.00. Pixler is the three-time defending D-2 indoor mile champion.

“It felt awesome. I felt really relaxed and strong,” she said. “I wasn't expecting to go that fast at all. I was hoping to at least faster than the 4:37 for my PR. I thought a 4:35 would be awesome.”

Senior teammate Jane Larson was way below that NCAA automatic mark, too. Larson (Fall City, Wash./Cedar Park Christian HS) came home a strong fifth in 4:48.89, giving her a guaranteed ticket to Albuquerque, N.M., for the D-2 nationals on March 12-13.

Seattle Pacific freshman Amanda Alvarez (Vancouver, Wash./Columbia River HS), in just her second college meet, flew nearly a foot farther in the triple jump than she did two weeks ago at the season-opening UW Indoor Preview. Alvarez went 38 feet, 4 inches. That was good for 13th place and was a 10-inch improvement from her first meet.

It also brought Alvarez within 8½ inches of the NCAA automatic qualifying distance of 39-0½. Both of her first two marks are good for provisional qualifying status.

Senior Lisa Anderberg (Edmonds, Wash./Kamiak HS) earned a provisional qualifying time in the 800 meters. She was 26th overall in 2 minutes, 15.67 seconds.

Also for the SPU women on Saturday, senior Kate Harline (Orem, Utah) ran 21st in the mile in 5:04.74, just 74 hundredths away from an NCAA provisional time. Freshman Trinna Miranda (Tigard, Ore.) was 28th in the triple jump at 35-10¾.

On the men's side, Falcon senior Chad Meis was 22nd in the mile in 4:13.62. Meis already has an NCAA provisional qualifying time in that event, having logged a school-record 4:11.39 at the UW Indoor Preview on Jan. 16. Meis finished 22nd on Saturday.

Senior Justin Felt (Eugene, Ore.) was 18th in the long jump at 21-4. Freshman Nate Johnson (Boise, Idaho) took 21st overall in his first college heptathlon, accumulating 4,194 points. Johnson's best finish in the two-day, seven event test was a tie for 11th in Saturday's 1,000 meter run.

The Falcons will have two weeks away from competition before returning to Dempsey on the University of Washington campus for the Husky Classic on Saturday, Feb. 12, and the UW Indoor Open on Feb. 13. Those will be their final tune-ups for the Great Northwest Athletic Conference championships, set for Feb. 20 in Nampa, Idaho.
