BERKELEY, Calif. -- Crystal Sims made her mark as a muti-event competitor during her two years at Mount Hood Community College in Gresham, Ore. She's now ready to start carving out a similar niche at Seattle Pacific.
Sims (Portland, Ore.) a junior and a Falcon newcomer this year after transferring from Mount Hood, is in sixth place among 11 competitors in the women's heptathlon after the first of two days at the Cal Multi Meet.
Buoyed by a third-place finish in the shot and fourth-place performances in the 100 hurdles and the 200-meter dash, Sims has 2,748 points heading into Wednesday's final three events: the long jump, javelin and 800 meters. Sophomore teammate Brittany Aanstad (Lake Stevens, Wash./Lake Steven HS) is 10th with 2,512; and teammate Jennifer Pike (Vancouver, Wash./Skyview HS), a junior, it eleventh at 2,461.
Sims had a shot put mark of 34 feet 2¼ inches. That was worth 557 points. Her fourth-place time of 15.07 in the 100 hurdles garnered her best event score of the day (832 points), and her fourth-place time of 26.05 in the 200 added 793 points.
Leading the standings is Cassie Markley of Idaho State with 3,196 points
Amsted's best day came in the high jump, as she cleared 5 feet, 6½ inches, putting 842 points into her column.
Pike's top place on Wednesday was in the 200 meter, where her 26.72 took sixth place and scored 735 points.
Sims won the heptathlon in last spring's Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges (NWAACC) multi-event championships, scoring 4,305 points. She won the 100 hurdles (15.67 seconds), long jump (16 feet, 8¾ inches) and tied for first in the high jump (5-0¼). Sims also was second in the 200 (25.97), third in the shot put (30-7 ¾) and third in the 800.
At the Southern Region championships, Sims was second in the 100 (12.95), 200 (25.98) and 400 (57.64) and ran on Mount Hood's victorious 4x100 and 4x400 relays.
After the conclusion of today's Cal Muftis, the Falcons will have some athletes in the San Francisco State Distance Carnival on Friday, and some in the Stanford Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
