BERKELEY, Calif. -- Crystal Sims came up with a strong third-place finish in the meet-ending 800 meters on Thursday afternoon to wind up seventh in the heptathlon for Seattle Pacific at the Cal Multi-Meet.
Falcon junior Sims (Portland, Ore.) crossed the line in 2 minutes, 22.01 seconds to pick up 796 points for a final seven-event total of 4,506. It was by far her best performance of the day against her 10 other competitors. Earlier on Thursday, Sims was eighth in the long jump at 15 feet, 9½ inches for 508 points, and took 10th in the javelin at 94-7 for 454 points.
SPU sophomore Brittany Aanstad (Lake Stevens, Wash./Lake Stevens HS) was ninth overall with 4,393 points, and junior Jennifer Pike (Vancouver, Wash./Skyview HS) finished 11th with 4,229.
Idaho State's Cassie Merkley, the leader after the first day, maintained it all the way to the finish. Markley totaled 5,246 points, beating runner-up Jasmine Johnson-McKeown by 370.
Pike had the highest individual finish among the three Falcons on Thursday, as she took second in the 800 at 2:21.22, worth 807 points. She was seventh in the javelin with a toss of 105-10 for 520 points, and took 11th in the long jump at 14-11¼ for 441 points.
Aanstad started her day with a pair of third-place finishes: 17-1½ in the long jump for 620 points, and 132-6 in the javelin for 675 points. That helped her move up one spot in the final standings. She was in 10th after the first day.
For the two-day meet, Sims had two thirds and two fourths in the seven events. On Wednesday, she was third in the shot put (34-2¼) and fourth in the 100 hurdles (15.07) and 200-meter dash (26.05). Aanstad, along witn her pair of thirds on Thursday, had a second-place finish in the high jump (5-6½) on Wednesday.
All three of those Falcons will join a group of their teammates Friday and Saturday at the Stanford Invitational.
