LAKEWOOD, Wash. – The Seattle Pacific men rowed to victory in the second varsity four race and a runner-up finish in the varsity four event Saturday and the women had a second-place showing in the second varsity fours at the Daffodil Cup crew regatta on American Lake.

The Falcon men's second varsity four was a convincing winner. SPU crossed the finish line in 7-minutes, 4.93-seconds, over 12 seconds ahead of runner-up Pacific Lutheran's time of 7:17.17. Washington State finished third (7:24.64), Puget Sound was fourth (7:25.16), Western Washington fifth (7:36.12) and Lewis & Clark sixth (7:49.09).

SPU's second varsity four was coxed by Kristi Tamaki and comprised entirely of novice rowers, including stroke Dain Carley, Matt Norgren, Phillip Mach and Donovan Fisk.

The varsity four crew came up just short in a battle with Lewis & Clark. The SPU men clocked a second-place time of 7:11.19, just one boat length behind the winning mark of 7:08.19. Puget Sound was third (7:13.29.4), followed by PLU (7:22.93), Seattle University (7:24.94), Willamette (7:25.60) and WSU (7:35.61).

The SPU women's first-year rowers had a fine second-place finish in the second varsity four event. They covered the 2,000-meter course in 8:20.39, well behind WWU's winning time of 7:46.48, but over 12 second ahead of third-place Puget Sound (8:32.55). Willamette finished fourth (8:48.57) and Lewis & Clark fifth (9:03.35).

The women's varsity four race was won in 7:44.16 by Willamette with WWU second (7:57.16), UPS third (8:15.59), PLU fourth (8:21.16), Seattle University fifth (8:46.80) and SPU sixth (9:00.41).

The featured race on the schedule was the women's varsity eight competition. The field included Western Washington and Seattle Pacific, ranked Nos. 1 and 3 in the NCAA Division II coaches poll, along with Puget Sound, which is No. 5 in the Division II rankings. WWU is the five-time defending national champion, SPU was the bronze medalist at the 2009 NCAA Championships and the Loggers were sixth in the Division II grand final at nationals.

WWU posted a time of 6:57.01 to edge UPS at the finish by 0.15-seconds. The Loggers crossed the line in 6:57.16, Willamette was third in 7:06.92 and SPU had a fourth-place time of 7:14.29. PLU finished fifth (7:43.46) and Lewis & Clark was sixth (7:51.40).

The Daffodil Cup was the second of eight regattas on the 2010 schedule for the Seattle Pacific crews. The season concludes for the men at the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association (WIRA) Championships, May 1-2 in Rancho Cordova, Calif.

The final regatta on the women's slate is the NCAA Championships, May 28-30, also on Lake Natoma in Rancho Cordova. The Falcons seek to make consecutive appearances in the NCAA Regatta for the first time in school history.

The SPU crews travel even farther south next weekend to compete at the Northwest Collegiate Rowing Conference (NCRC) Invitational. That regatta takes place, Saturday, April 3 on Vancouver Lake in Vancouver, Wash.
