TACOMA -- For Amanda Alvarez, it was déjà vu.

The Seattle Pacific freshman, who didn't waste any time making her mark during the indoor track and field season, got off to just as solid a start outdoors on Saturday. Alvarez posted an NCAA Division II provisional qualifying mark in the triple jump, soaring a personal best 39 feet, 0¼ inches to win that event in the UPS Outdoor Preview at Baker Stadium on the University of Puget Sound campus.

Alvarez (Vancouver, Wash./Columbia River HS) went 8¼ inches farther than her best indoor mark of 38-4, which she set on Jan. 30 at the UW Invitational. She began her college career with a leap of 37-6 on Jan. 16 at the UW Indoor Preview. That was good for provisional qual status for the NCAA indoor meet.

“I think she's a 40-foot triple jumper for sure,” Falcons coach Karl Lerum said. “She has a good rhythm right now.”

In the four-way season opener, the Seattle Pacific women finished with 213 points, second to Western Washington's 237. Lewis & Clark was third with 126, and host Puget Sound was fourth with 97.

Alvarez' performance led a 1-2-3-4 Falcon finish in the triple jump. Freshman sister Athena Alvarez was second at 36-6½, freshman Kelly Jenkins (Hillsboro, Ore.) was third at 34-1½, and senior Jocelyn Charette (Lakewood, Wash./Curtis HS) took fourth at 33-4.

Trinna Miranda 2010
SPU also dominated the long jump with a sweep of the top three spots. Freshman Trinna Miranda (Tigard, Ore.) and Amanda Alvarez both went 17-7, but Miranda got first place on the basis of fewer attempts. Both, however, are now automatic qualifiers for the Great Northwest Athletic Conference meet in that event. Jenkins was third at 16-7¾.

Sophomore pole vaulted Michaela Caldwell (Marysville, Wash./Marysville-Pilchuck HS) also earned a GNAC automatic qualifying mark, clearing 10-11¾ for a second-place finish in that event.

Sophomore Natalie Nobbs (Yakima, Wash./Riverside Christian HS) joined Amanda Alvarez in the winner's circle on Saturday, taking the 400-meter hurdles in 1:06.75. Freshman Kira Lewis (Yakima, Wash./West Valley HS) made a 1-2 Seattle Pacific finish with her time of 1:08.82.

Seattle Pacific won both relays, taking the 4x100 in 49.23, and the 4x400 in 4:08.19.

The Falcons had a number of other runner-up placers on Saturday: junior Crystal Sims (Portland, Ore.) in the 200 at 26.25 seconds, freshman Emily Quatier (Portland, Ore.) in the 400 at 59.43, freshman Kelsey Brown (Colorado Springs, Colo.) in the 800 at 2:26.23, sophomore Natty Plunkett (Bellevue, Wash./Newport HS) in the 1,500 at 4:54.1, freshman Katy Gross (Everett, Wash./Cascade HS) in the high jump at 5-3, and sophomore Carly Andrews (Issaquah, Wash./Issaquah HS) in the javelin at 111-8.

Overall, Lerum went home satisfied from the opening day.

“It's a time to get out there and not necessarily post any great, significant marks, but try to run a lot of events and get started and take advantage of the warm weather,” he said.

FALCON MEN WIN FOUR EVENTS
The Seattle Pacific men were first to the finish line with a fair amount of frequency in the season-opening UPS Outdoor Preview.

Justin Felt 2010
Senior Justin Felt, sophomore Nathanael Sleight and freshmen Nate Seely and AJ Baker all won their respective events on Saturday at Baker Stadium.

The Falcon men finished third in the team standings with 110 1/2 points. Western Washington won with 279.

Felt (Eugene, Ore.) didn't actually have a finish line to hit. Instead, he went farther than anyone in the long jump, going 22 feet, 0¾ inches to give him an automatic ticket to the GNAC championship meet.

Baker (AuGres, Mich.) teamed up with another Falcon freshman, Caleb Parker (Richland, Wash./Richland HS) for a 1-2 finish in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Baker won in 10 minuets, 5.26 seconds; Parker was next in 10:20.06.

Nate Seely 2010
Seely (Lynden, Wash./Lynden HS), who won the GNAC 800-meter indoor title on Feb 20, found some success at a longer distance on Saturday, capturing the 1,500 meters in 4:02.7.

Sleight (Bellevue, Wash./Bellevue Christian HS) took charge of the 800, winning in 1:59.63.

In addition to Parker in the steeple, freshman Nate Johnson (Boise, Idaho) took second in the 110-meter hurdle in 17.80.

Both Falcon teams have next weekend off while the NCAA indoor championships take place in Albuquerque, N.M. The outdoor schedule resumes on March 20 at the Oregon Preview in Eugene.
