SPU Crews Win Pair of Men's Races

Falcons are runners-up in women's varsity eight event

LOWELL, Ore. – Two Seattle Pacific men's crews won races Saturday and the Falcons women were runners-up in the varsity eight race at the Covered Bridge Regatta on Dexter Lake.

SPU's first-year rowers clocked an impressive time of 7-minutes, 21.60-seconds to win the men's novice four event by nearly 18 seconds. Humboldt State finished second in 7:39.36, followed by Willamette (7:45.22), Lewis and Clark (7:48.38) and Reed (8:49.14).

The Falcons were also convincing victors in the men's second varsity four race. SPU covered the 2,000-meter course in 7:34.85, 12 seconds faster than second-place Portland State's time of 7:46.83. Humboldt State placed third (7:54.98), Lewis and Clark was fourth (7:59.36) and Oregon fifth (8:27.88).

Lewis and Clark posted a winning time of 7:40.10 in the men's varsity four competition. SPU was sixth in that race in 7:57.63, finishing ahead of  San Diego State (8:06.43).

The same rowers from the men's four-oared crews got together to compete in the varsity eight race later in the day. SPU turned in a fifth-place time of 7:12.04. Pacific Lutheran won the race in 6:50.53, followed by Seattle University (7:00.79), Lewis and Clark (7:03.97) and Willamette (7:05.61). San Diego State was sixth (7:22.61) and Humboldt State seventh (7:33.03).

The women's varsity eight race featured a fantastic finish between two ranked crews. The Falcons, ranked No. 5 among NCAA Division II crews, were edged by three seats against Willamette. The Bearcats, listed No. 9 in the Division III coaches poll, registered a winning time of 7:37.19 and SPU crossed the finish line in 7:38.54. Humboldt State was third (7:50.64), PLU was fourth (8:09.02) Lewis and Clark was fifth (8:13.35) and Seattle University was sixth (8:32.32).

The Falcons finished seventh in the women's varsity four event with a time of 8:39.27. Willamette won that race in 8:03.20, over 21 seconds faster than runner-up Humboldt State (8:24.30).

The Covered Bridge Regatta was the fourth of eight regattas on the 2010 schedule for the Seattle Pacific crews.

Next week, the Falcons visit Vancouver, Wash. for the Northwest College Rowing Conference (NCRC) Championships on Vancouver Lake. The regatta is slated for Saturday, April 17.
