Sarah Martinez scored a pair of first-half goals less than four minutes apart and notched her second career hat trick in Seattle Pacific University's 4-1 non-conference women's soccer win over Humboldt State Monday at Interbay Stadium.
Kayla Stiegemeier (Fr., Rathdrum, Id.) put the 12th-ranked Falcons (2-0-0) in front after 12 minutes on a feed from Martinez (Sr., Bothell, Wa./Cedar Park Christian).
Martinez latched on to a low bending ball from
Meredith Teague (Jr., Redmond, Wa./Bellevue Christian) for her first goal at 18:24, then scored again from 10 yards to make it 3-0 at 22:15.
Shannon Oakes (Jr., Boise, Id.) got her second assist six minutes into the second half, pushing the ball to Martinez, who turned and fired into the upper right corner from 14 yards.
Before leaving the game in the 60th minute, Martinez had collected seven total points, which ranks No. 2 on the SPU single game list. She has five goals in the first two games.
Martinez now has seven career game-winning goals–one behind Shannon Lovejoy–and 90 total points–21 behind Lovejoy.
Humboldt State (0-2-1) averted a shutout in the 79th minute. Meghan Connolly rose above the crowd to head home a flicked-on corner kick. Allison Lawrence and Erin Ashdown assisted.
The Falcons finished with a 17-7 advantage in shots and 6-3 in corners. They forced seven saves off 'Jacks staring keeper Kelly Sandberg in the first half.
Seattle Pacific hosts Sonoma State Thursday night at 7.
