Late Kemper Goal Salvages Draw For Falcons

SEATTLE (Sept. 20) – Matt Kemper's header with 67 seconds remaining in regulation kept 4th-ranked Seattle Pacific University unbeaten with a 1-1 tie against also undefeated Montana State Billings in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference soccer game Thursday night at Interbay Stadium.

The Yellowjackets (7-0-1) had taken the lead on the 12th goal of the year by Sam Charles in the 79th minute. The Falcons (4-0-4) matched a team record with their third successive draw.

Kemper (Sr., Colorado Springs, Co.) leaped to nod home a 35-yard free kick from Doug Whitney (Fr., Edmonds, Wa./Ed.-Woodway). It was only the second goal allowed by MSUB this season.

Both teams fired shots off the metalwork. Alec Nelson of SPU hit the crossbar in the in the 38th minute, and he had also seen an earlier attempt cleared off the line by a 'Jackets' defender in the 8th minute.

A bending, 14-yard drive by Charles caromed off the left post in the 12th minute.

Lurking at the far post, Charles headed in a corner kick from Chris Cornish at 78:34.

Kellen Rosten (Sr., Colorado Springs, Co.) made five saves, including a full-stretch stop of Charles with 13 minutes left in regulation. MSUB keeper Sander Tollefson made three stops.

Each team finished with 11 shots.

Seattle Pacific hosts Grand Canyon Saturday night at 7:30.
