Martinez Shoots No. 3 Falcon Women Past MSU Billings

SEATTLE (Sept. 27) – Sarah Martinez scored midway through the first half to give No. 3-ranked Seattle Pacific University its 11th consecutive victory in a 1-0 win over Montana State Billings in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's soccer match Thursday night at Interbay Stadium.

The Falcons (5-0-0/11-0-0) equaled their record start of 2005 with the victory. The Yellowjackets
dropped to 5-4-1 and 2-2-1 in league.

The game's lone goal came in the 29th minute. Martinez trapped a long ball from Meredith Teague ball near the top of the box, made a cut-back move and ripped a hard shot to the near post.

It was Martinez' 13th goal of the year and the 11th assist for Teague, who is now two away from tying the SPU season record. Martinez, who is now tied for the GNAC career lead with 45 goals, has scored five times in the last three games.

With 17 minutes remaining in the match, Martinez had another near-goal cleared off the end line by a Yellowjacket defender after she had threaded it by keeper Jordan Fenwick.

Fenwick recorded a staggering 17 saves in the match, as Seattle Pacific peppered the MSUB goal with 26 shots.

SPU earned eight corner kicks while not conceding Billings one. The visitors managed only one shot.

The Falcons play next at No. 15 Seattle University on Saturday afternoon at 1.
