ELLENSBURG, Wash. – Junior forward
Jocelyn Charette scored a goal and added an assist, both inside the opening three minutes Saturday, leading the eighth-ranked Seattle Pacific women to a Great Northwest Athletic Conference victory over Central Washington at CWU Soccer Field.
“It was a wonderful start and they were two quality goals that were great finishes,” said sixth-year SPU coach
Chuck Sekyra. “It was great to have us come out like that. I would take that every time out.“
Charette (Lakewood, Wash./Curtis) broke free with a through pass from
Mallorie Gerstmann (Puyallup, Wash./Cascade Christian) and sent a 15-yard strike into the goal at 1:20 for her fifth goal of the season.
That was not the quickest goal in SPU history, but it came within 11 seconds of that record. Alex Kirk scored 1:09 into a 2006 game against Cal State Monterey Bay for the program's earliest goal.
Charette set up the second goal just 1-minute, 18-seconds later. She distributed a pass into the goalmouth and junior
Janae Godoy (Yakima, Wash./West Valley) directed it into the goal from eight yards out at 2:38. That was the second goal of the season for Godoy.
“
Jocelyn Charette was the complete package today, from beginning to end,” Sekyra exclaimed. “She came out and took it upon herself to make a huge difference. She created some great chances for herself and others that were just awesome. Jocelyn was brilliant today.”
The two quick tallies came after a pre-game speech in which Sekyra emphasized the importance of a good early start against Central, which gave league-leading Western Washington all it could handle in a 2-1 loss Wednesday in Ellensburg.
“We talked about trying to come out with a killer instinct and put a team away as fast we could and we did that really well today,” he said. “We kept going at them and we had a few other chances to put them away in the second half.”
The Falcons extended their unbeaten streak to eight games, improving their overall record to 13-1-2. SPU remained in second place in the GNAC standings, one game behind WWU, with a 7-1-1 mark.
SPU owns a 14-1-1 all-time advantage against the Wildcats with its seventh straight series win. CWU's record fell to 7-6-3 and 4-5-1 in conference play.
Central's best scoring chance came in the 64th minute, but Gwenna Carie's shot caromed off the post.
The Wildcats increased the pressure on the SPU goal late in the game, attempting five of their nine shots during the final eight minutes. One of those shots, an 87th-minute try by Kaycie Hutchins, was collected by
Maddie Dickinson for the Falcon goalkeeper's only save of the game. Dickson picked up her sixth shutout, the 11th for the team.
Amber Easterbrook was credited with seven saves for the Wildcats, who were doubled up in the shot category. SPU finished with 18 shots to nine for CWU.
The Falcons remain on the road for a conference game at Northwest Nazarene, Wednesday, Oct. 29 in Nampa, Idaho. SPU defeated the Crusaders 6-0 during the first meeting, Oct. 18 in Seattle.
The next home game for the SPU women is Nov. 1 at 7 p.m. against Cal State L.A. That is the nightcap of a doubleheader with the men, who play at 4:30 p.m.
The Nov. 1 doubleheader is Neil Callahan Night, honoring the youth soccer pioneer and former president of the Seattle Youth Soccer Association who passed away last December.
