SEATTLE – Junior midfielder
Janae Godoy netted two goals inside the opening 22 minutes Thursday and that's all the fourth-ranked Seattle Pacific women needed in a 2-0 Great Northwest Athletic Conference win over Western Oregon at Interbay Soccer Stadium.
The Falcons extended their unbeaten streak to 11 games, outscoring opponents 40-4 during that span. They improved their overall record to 16-1-2 and 9-1-1 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play.
SPU remained in second place in the conference standings, but gained ground on league-leading Western Washington (9-0-2), which tied 1-1 at home Thursday against Saint Martin's.
Both goals came after Godoy (Yakima, Wash./West Valley) ran on to low passes that were sent through the Wolves back line. Freshman
Savanna Hanson (Centennial, Colo./Littleton) served a long ball that Godoy caught up with, dribbled into the box and deposited into the goal from eight yards out at 6:14. Along with Hanson, senior
Shannon Oakes (Boise, Idaho/Boise) was credited with an assist on the goal.
Oakes distributed another assist just under 15 minutes later, in a near replay of the first scoring situation. She pushed a low pass through the defense that Godoy collected before sending a six-yard strike into the goal at 21:06.
The game was played while constant rain battered the turf.
“Janae scored two great goals and Shannon had two great assists. To have two perfect balls on a rainy night like this was good for our team,” said SPU coach
Chuck Sekyra.
Godoy became the seventh different SPU player to record a multiple-goal game. She doubled her season output with her third and fourth goals.
“We make it hard for teams to defend us,” Sekyra said about his team's balanced offense. “We have a lot of players capable of scoring and opponents don't know who to try and stop.”
Junior goalkeeper
Jesslyn Rahm (Eugene, Ore.) saved two shots en route to her sixth shutout and the 13th for the Falcons.
Western goalkeeper Kelsie Blachly allowed both goals and stopped one shot before being replaced at halftime. Brittney Rigtrup recorded four saves in the second half for the Wolves, who were outshot by a 17-5 margin.
“We defended really well, took control of the game and created some good chances,” Sekyra described.
Western Oregon's record dropped to 7-10-2 and 3-6-2 in GNAC play. SPU swept the season series from the Wolves and increased its series advantage to 14-2. The Falcons won this year's first meeting 4-0 in Monmouth.
The SPU women close out the regular season at home on Saturday against Montana State Billings. Kick-off is 7 p.m. at Interbay Stadium
The Falcons are currently seeded second in the West Region and, if selected to host, will play home NCAA Tournament games on Nov. 13 and 15.
