SEATTLE -- This time, the Seattle Pacific Falcons added to their lead late in the game. And that resulted in their first Great Northwest Athletic Conference volleyball victory of the season on Thursday night.
Up 19-18 in Game 4, Cortney Weedman served up four straight points, and the Falcons went on to close out Saint Martin's in a back-and-forth match at Brougham Pavilion.
Scores were 25-15, 16-25, 25-17, 25-21.
“It was big - we definitely needed to win that one,” Falcons coach Chris Johnson said. “I think we started to build some confidence throughout the week. It was good to see us holding leads and extending leads tonight.”
The Falcons (1-2 GNAC, 3-9 overall) snapped an overall four-match losing streak. Saint Martin's fell to 0-3 in conference play, 2-9 overall.
Junior Nikki Finley (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) led Seattle Pacific on the attack with 17 kills, and freshman Lindsey Wodrich (Richland, Wash.) added 15. Weedman (Scottsdale, Ariz.) had 29 assists, and Wodrich also came up with 12 digs.
Both teams had their turn with the momentum. The Falcons enjoyed it during Game 1, scoring six straight points to snap a 5-5 tie, the last five of which were served up by Wodrich. The Saints never got closer than two points the rest of the way.
But it went the other way in Game 2. Saint Martin's broke out of a 9-9 tie and took it all the way to 22-13 before closing out the Falcons.
Seattle Pacific was down early in Game 3, but never by more than two points. Just like the first game, it was tied at 5-5 when Wodrich took over the serve. The Falcons made it 9-5, and later expanded their advantage to 24-15.
“It's such a game of momentum. If you get down early, it's really tough to come back,” Johnson said. “But if you get out of the gate well, it tends to be easier to hold that lead.”
The fourth game seesawed. Seattle Pacific was down 15-12, but eventually went up 18-17. A sideout made it 18-all, and the Falcons went ahead to stay, 19-18, on a kill by Finley. Subsequent kills by Jessica Bette court (South Lake Tahoe, Calif.), Finley, Paige Hoffman (Encinitas, Calif.) and Bettencourt again made it 23-18.
For the match, SPU hit at a .259 clip - its best mark since hitting .265 in a season-opening four-game victory against Cal State Stanislaus. Saint Martin's which came in hitting just .045 for the season, hit at .177 on Thursday.
Freshman Anna Herold (Bothell, Wash.) came up with 14 digs to lead SPU in that department. Wodrich had 12 and Finley 10.
Junior Shealaun Campisi (Buckley, Wash., White River HS) topped Saint Martin's with 14 kills, and Andrea Tarbet (Rochester, Wash.) had 13. Freshman Amber Roberts (Tacoma, Wash., Wilson HS) earned 37 assists, and Campisi had 14 digs.
Seattle Pacific takes on Central Washington on Saturday at 3 p.m. in Brougham.
