BILLINGS, Mont. -- Sophomore forward
Amanda Johnson set up the first goal and scored the second Saturday, starting the 17th-ranked Seattle Pacific women on their way to a 3-0 triumph over Montana State Billings at MSUB soccer field.
The Falcons improved their Great Northwest Athletic Conference record to 2-1 with an 8-1-1 overall ledger. Montana dropped to 5-4 and 0-2 in GNAC play.
Johnson (Duval, Wash./Cedarcrest) made a brilliant dribbling run through three defenders before laying the ball off to freshman
Brandi Hamre (Bremerton, Wash./Central Kitsap) for an easy tap in. The goal, at 8:30, was the second of the season for Hamre.
Exactly eleven minutes later, Johnson netted her team-leading fifth goal. She tallied four goals during the entire 2007 season. The goal was created by a great pass from senior
Shannon Oakes (Boise, Idaho), who delivered a through ball into the box. Johnson touched it twice before directing a blast into the far corner of the net at 19:30.
Junior
Kayla Stiegemeier (Rathdrum, Idaho) added an insurance goal at 79:24 with a volley into the upper corner off a pass that was chipped over the defense by junior
Janae Godoy (Yakima, Wash./West Valley). The serve set up a chase for the ball between the Yellowjackets goalkeeper and Stiegemeier, who was knocked over immediately after launching the shot.
“All three goals were quality goals,” said SPU coach
Chuck Sekyra. “We also had two goals called back, both of them we thought were good. One was on a tackle in the box and the other was a questionable hand ball.”
Sophomore goalkeeper
Maddie Dickinson (Vancouver, Wash./Skyview) was credited with three saves en route to her fourth shutout. The Falcons blanked five of their last six opponents, surrendering just one goal in the last 666 minutes.
SPU outshot the Yellowjackets by a 14-6 margin.
Jordan Fenwick played the first 79 minutes for Billings, stopping five shots before giving way for reserve Brittany Knudtzon.
The Falcons completed a three-game road trip, their longest of the season.
“It's always nice to go on the road and dominate a team,” Sekyra exclaimed. “We play four of our next five at home and that will be fun.”
The SPU women return home to host Central Washington, Wednesday (Oct. 1) in a 7 p.m. game at Interbay Stadium.
