LACEY, Wash. -- A little rust could have been expected after an eight-day break from competition. Passes might not be as crisp, shots not as sharp.
That was not the case Wednesday for the fourth-ranked Seattle Pacific women's soccer team, which was on top of it's game despite playing for the first time since Oct. 6.
Senior Jocelyn Charette scored in the first half, then set up a second-half insurance tally by sophomore Kelsey Jenkins as the Falcons beat Saint Martin's 2-0 in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference contest.
“It was one of our best games of the season. I don't remember them having any chances. We scored two nice goals, hit the post three times and they cleared a ball off the line once,” said SPU coach Chuck Sekyra. “We played such a great, complete game. We defended well, we possessed the ball well and we created a lot of chances.”
Wednesday's victory boosted SPU to 12-1-0 overall, 5-1-0 in the GNAC. The defending NCAA Division II champion Falcons are ranked No. 1 in the West Region and will host playoff games if they maintain that status. The Saints fell to 7-7-0, 3-4-0 in conference play.
Along with the long layoff, the game had all the makings of a dangerous test for SPU. The Saints defeated defending GNAC champion Western Washington in their last home game, ending WWU's 21-game conference unbeaten streak. Wednesday also marked the inaugural game at SMU Soccer Field on the Saints' campus.
“It was the grand opening of their new field, the first time they are playing there and you know they wanted to christen it,” Sekyra said. “They were at home where they have done well, beating Western (Washington) and a couple of other strong teams.
“Our kids came out and, from the beginning whistle to the end, we really played a great soccer game all around. Defensively we were sound and we created a ton of chances.”
One of those chances paid dividends at 22:28. Charette (Lakewood, Wash./Curtis HS) took a pass from freshman defender Andrea Chan (Vancouver, Wash./Central Catholic HS), held off a defender and slipped a 16-yard shot past SMU's onrushing goalkeeper Ashley Engel and inside the far left post.
The goal was the team-leading sixth of the season for Charette and her third game-winning tally.
“Joecelyn had a great game,” Sekyra said. “She was all over the place, finding her teammates, running off the ball, getting shots and taking players on. She was great.”
SPU took that 1-0 lead into halftime, having outshot the Saints 12-3 during the opening period.
The Falcons second goal came 30 minutes into the second half, after a number of near-misses.
Chan served a cross to Charette, who flicked it on to set up an eight-yard strike by Jenkins (Kent, Wash./Kentwood HS) at 75:48. That was the third goal in the last four games for Jenkins and her fourth overall.
“Jocelyn got to the cross first, but she couldn't turn and finish herself so she just flicked it on to her left. KJ kept running and buried it on a half volley,” Sekyra described.
“It was a great goal and came right after we hit the post twice within five minutes. Back-to-back posts, one on one side and then one on the other. I was wondering if we would ever put the game away and then bam, that happens.”
Junior Maddie Dickinson (Vancouver, Wash./Skyview HS), the nation's leading goalkeeper, made six saves for SPU. She stretched her season-long scoreless streak to 675 minutes. Overall, Dickinson has gone eight-plus games totaling 818-minutes, 7-seconds since allowing a goal, dating back to SPU's 3-1 victory against Metro State in last year's NCAA Division II semifinals.
Dickinson is just 17 minutes away from the school's all-time shutout streak of 835 minutes, set by Jennifer Hull in 2003.
Engel was credited with three saves for the Saints, who were outshot 17-11.
The Falcons return to the field on Saturday in Nampa, Idaho, against Northwest Nazarene at 11 a.m. Pacific Time.
“We've got a team who hasn't played for a week and they are waiting for us. We have to go finish the job of the week, playing two great games on the road,” Sekyra said. “I just think we are going the right direction and I hope we play even better Saturday than we did today. I really like where the team is right now.”
