SEATTLE -- A lot is on the line during the final seven games of the regular season.
The 14th-ranked Seattle Pacific women's soccer team (8-1-2) begins its second swing through the Great Northwest Athletic Conference schedule, starting at home on Thursday, Oct. 14. The Falcons are at Interbay Stadium to host Northwest Nazarene (4-7-0) for a 7 p.m. game that is the nightcap of a doubleheader. The SPU men host 19th-ranked Grand Canyon at 4:30 p.m.
On Saturday, Oct. 16, the SPU women visit Montana State Billings (8-2-1) at noon Pacific Time (1 p.m. Mountain Time).
GNAC Title Hunt
Midway through the GNAC slate and the defending conference champion Falcons are tied atop the standings with Western Washington. Both have 16 points on 5-1-1 league records. MSU Billings is 5-2-0, just one point off the leaders' pace.
Seattle Pacific was projected to repeat as GNAC champion in the preseason coaches poll. The Falcons captured the 2009 conference crown with a 9-2-1 record. They have won six of the nine titles since the GNAC began sponsoring women's soccer in 2001.
Not only is the league title up for grabs, but teams are battling for playoff berths and seedings. The top seed in the West region gains the advantage of hosting the first two rounds of the NCAA Division II Tournament.
Two years ago, that early postseason home field advantage propelled the Falcons to the 2008 national championship. Last year they were sent on the road to San Diego and lost in the first round on a penalty kick tiebreaker after playing Chico State to a scoreless tie.
