SEATTLE – Senior goalkeeper
Maddie Dickinson made two saves to earn her record-setting 26th career shutout as fifth-ranked Seattle Pacific played to a 0-0 double overtime tie with Simon Fraser in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's soccer game at Interbay Stadium.
Dickinson (Vancouver, Wash./Skyview HS) broke the previous SPU career shutout record set by Jennifer Hull from 2001-03. Dickinson tied the mark of 25 last Saturday in the Falcons' 6-0 victory at Western Oregon. The Simon Fraser contest was her seventh shutout of the season.
“She was fantastic tonight. The one chance they had she snuffed out on the corner with a brilliant save,” SPU coach
Chuck Sekyra said of Dickinson.
“I have to give it to Jenn Hull. Jenn Hull was a great player for a long time and somebody that I enjoyed coaching here. For Maddie to break her record says everything about
Maddie Dickinson. What a great goalkeeper and great person. We need about 12 more shutouts from Maddie this year.”
The Falcons (7-1-2, 4-1-1 GNAC) had the decided advantage in play, outshooting Simon Fraser (4-3-1, 3-2-1 GNAC) by a 16-5 margin. But Clan goalkeeper Amelia Ng came up with six saves to keep Seattle Pacific off the scoreboard.
“It's tough to get a tie tonight when we played very well and dominated the game. When you outshoot somebody 16-5 you expect a little more,” Sekyra said. “But they sat behind the ball quite a bit, had a good game plan, looked to counter and kind of frustrated us with those numbers behind the ball.
“I'm really proud of my kids. We played hard and dominated that game. We were very organized, kept the ball and played our hearts out. We were the better team, but didn't get the result we were looking for.”
Dickinson's toughest save of the night came with 15:30 left in the first half on a header by Lauren Lachlan. The shot went hard off of Dickinson's chest and rebounded in front of her, but she leaped forward and scooped up the loose ball.
The Falcons had two dangerous chances during the 20 extra minutes. The first one came with 4:40 left in the first overtime when sophomore midfielder
Kendall Thoreson (Seattle/King's) lofted a 23-yard free kick from the left of the penalty area restraining arc over a four-person Simon Fraser wall toward the right post. Ng made the save, had the ball squirt out of her hands, but grabbed it again before anyone could connect with it.
Then to start the second and final 10-minute overtime, freshman forward
Kellie Zakrzewski took a shot off the opening kickoff that sizzled just inches wide of the left post.
The only ball that went into the net was one by Simon Fraser with 15:35 left in regulation time, but the offside flag was up well before the shot, and the goal was waved off.
The Falcons don't return to action until next Saturday in Ellensburg against Central Washington at 11 a.m.
