SEATTLE -- Joseph Martin directed a 15-yard header to the lower left corner 3:16 into the first sudden-death overtime period on Wednesday, leading Simon Fraser to a 3-2 come-from-behind men's soccer victory against Seattle Pacific at Interbay Stadium.

Tyler Schultz and Elliot Morton scored for the Falcons, who equaled the number of goals SFU had surrendered in its first eight games combined. The goal by junior defender Morton (Tacoma/Bellarmine Prep) midway through the 52nd minute put Simon Fraser at a deficit for the first time all season. He gave SPU a 2-1 lead that held up until Helge Neumann tied it for the Clan with 4:47 left in regulation time.

Simon Fraser (9-0-0) retained its perfect record and vaulted past SPU into first place in the GNAC with 12 points and a 4-0-0 record. The Falcons dropped to second place with their first conference setback. They have 10 points and a 3-1-1 league ledger.

Martin's golden goal at 93:16 came on a target ball that was crossed in from the left wing side by Max Baessato. Martin went up for a twisting header that flew into the back left corner for his first goal of the season.

The Falcons play host to Hawaii Pacific in a non-conference game on Friday night at 7 at Interbay.

Simon Fraser, which had three shots on goal from the run of play during the first two minutes of the game, used a set piece to get onto the scoreboard with just 5:20 off the clock. Clan forward Sang Hwang took a free kick 25 yards straight in front of the net, and sent it flying over a four-man Falcon wall and into the upper right corner.

But the Falcons pulled even just three minutes later. Junior midfielder Schultz (Scottsdale, Ariz.), playing about 30 yards from the Simon Fraser net toward the left side of the field, dribbled laterally before letting loose with a shot that bent high into the back right corner at 8:28.

“Schultz hit an absolute cracker and really got us going from that point on,” SPU coach Mark Collings described. “Schultzie battled an injury basically all off-season and so early on he wasn't quite into form. Now we're starting to see what we expected from Tyler.

“He's very dynamic and difficult to deal with. He has to be one of the better attacking players in our conference and he showed why tonight. He came through big time for us when we needed a lift.”

The tying tally was the fourth goal of the year for Schultz, moving him into a tie with senior midfielder Andy Wolverton for the team lead. Schultz has at least one point in five of the last six games, with four goals and two assists during that span.

Morton headed in a point-blank shot on a play that started with a corner kick to put Seattle Pacific up 2-1 at 51:22. Junior midfielder Drew Williams (Bend, Ore.) took the corner from the right wing side, sending a low kick across the goalmouth. Schultz flicked a header across to Morton, who knocked it in off his head from directly in front of the left post for his second goal of the year.

“In the second half we came out and got another great goal, off a set piece. Elliot finished at the back post,” said Collings. “Then, boy we hit the post and we hit everything but the back of the net. You've got to give it to their goalkeeper, he played fantastic tonight.”

Hide Ozawa was credited with eight saves for the Clan, including five during the second half to keep his team in position to equalize.

Neumann tied it at 85:13 when Thomas McCole found him with a pass at the top of the penalty area just to the left of the arc. Neumann uncorked a 20-yard shot that sizzled into the back right corner.

The Falcons had the advantage offensively, with 20 shots to Simon Fraser's 14, and seven corner kicks to just three for the Clan.

Seattle Pacific had two near-misses on a chance to take a two-goal lead midway through the second half. On the first, Schultz chased a ball all the way down the left wing, caught up and took it into the box. His shot was saved by Ozawa, and the rebound came out to Williams at the top of the box. But his follow-up shot went wide right with 27:55 left to play.

Then just inside 17 minutes to play, Ryan Brand broke downfield, went all the way into the box and brought Ozawa off his line. But with a wide-open net, Brand's hard shot clanged off the right post.

The Falcons created two dangerous first-half chances and Schultz was involved with both of them. Early in the 14th minute, his cross from the left side into the box laded at the feet of freshman forward Blaine Carver (Soldotna, Alaska) for a 15-yard shot that was deflected over the top by Ozawa.

Just four minutes later, Schultz connected again with Carver on a cross in from the left side. Carver one-timed it from the top of the 6-yard box, but Ozawa easily grabbed the ball.

SPU sophomore goalkeeper Zach Johnson (Snohomish, Wash./Snohomish HS) preserved the 1-1 tie with 19:25 left in the first half when he went down to stop a shot by Simon Fraser's Gagan Josan as Josan went into the box one-on-one and shot from 10 yards straight in front of the net.

Johnson had five saves for the night.
