SEATTLE -- Brittney Taylor scored 27 points, including two key baskets inside the last 90 seconds, and Humboldt State nailed four straight free throws in the final 27 seconds to help seventh-seeded Humboldt State knock off UC San Diego 76-72 in the first round of the NCAA Division II West Region women's basketball tournament on Friday at Brougham Pavilion.

It was the second time in a week -- and the third time in four meetings this season -- that the Lumberjacks (20-10) have beaten UC San Diego (25-5). Humboldt downed the Tritons last Thursday in the semifinals of the California Collegiate Athletic Association tournament, 82-78.

UC San Diego used an 11-0 run early in the second half to take a 12-point lead at 53-41. But Humboldt climbed back in and used a 7-0 surge to turn a 65-62 deficit into a 69-65 lead. Taylor capped that run with a 22-footer from the right corner in traffic that she got off just as the shot clock buzzer was sounding.

Then, with the Lumberjacks up 70-69, Taylor hit a turnaround lay-in with 27.4 seconds remaining to make it 72-69.

Luiza Osborne and Lisa Petty each sank two free throws in the time that remained to seal the win.

Bobic finished with 16 points for Humboldt, and Petty wound up with 15.

Annette Ilg tallied 25 points for UC San Diego, and Chelsea Carlisle added 16.

Humboldt takes on Chico State in the West Region semifinals on Saturday at 5 p.m. at Brougham Pavilion. Sixth-seeded Chico upset No. 3 Western Washington 79-68 in an earlier first-round game.
