HONOLULU, Hawaii – Junior
Savanna Hanson rebounded a teammate's miss and scored a golden goal with 58 seconds left in the final overtime Saturday, lifting the 17th-ranked Seattle Pacific women to a 2-1 win over Hawaii Pacific in a non-conference contest at Waipio Soccer Park.
The last-minute victory kept the Falcons (3-0-1) unbeaten and they concluded a three-game Hawaii road trip with two wins and a tie. SPU settled for a 0-0 draw against BYU-Hawaii on Wednesday despite a 29-11 shot advantage.
The Falcons opened the season at home on Sept. 3 with a 3-0 victory over Humboldt State.
“We played four games in eight days and we came out of here with what we need. We're okay at 3-0-1,” said SPU coach
Chuck Sekyra, whose team completed non-league play without a loss.
The Falcons nearly had Saturday's game won in regulation on the strength of an early goal from
Kelsey Jenkins (Kent, Wash./Kentwood HS). The junior midfielder dribbled through the box and sent a 10-yard strike into the upper left corner at 12:56.
That lead held up through 88 minutes, until the Sea Warriors equalized on a goal by Sanoe Souza with 1:54 remaining in regulation.
SPU senior goalkeeper
Maddie Dickinson (Vancouver, Wash./Skyview HS) appeared to have been run into on the play, but no foul was whistled and the goal was allowed. That was the only score Dickinson has yielded in 399 minutes this season.
Dickinson was credited with five saves against Hawaii Pacific (0-3).
Sekyra took advantage of the five-minute break between regulation and the two, 10-minute overtime sessions to encourage his road-weary team.
“I just said that 'You can finish these guys, you can get this done.' My team played very inspired and dominated the whole overtime. I'm really proud of them.”
SPU sophomore
Brittany Langdon (Irvine, Calif./Northwood HS) nearly ended the game in the 107th minute, but her apparent goal was disallowed by an offside call.
Three minutes later junior
Brandi Hamre (Bremerton, Wash./Central Kitsap HS) blasted a shot that was stopped by HPU goalkeeper Arianne Makino, who deflected the ball, but was unable to catch it. Hanson (Centennial, Colo.) pounced on the loose ball in the six-yard box and pushed it into the right side netting for the first game-winning goal of her career.
Makino stopped seven shots for the Sea Warriors, who were outshot 14-10.
The Falcons return home to begin Great Northwest Athletic Conference play on Thursday, Sept. 16 against Montana State Billings. Kick-off is 7 p.m. at Interbay Stadium.
