SEATTLE – The 19th-ranked Seattle Pacific women converted the first two shots of the game Thursday en route to a 3-0 victory over Montana State Billings in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference soccer opener for both teams at Interbay Stadium.
The Falcons (4-0-1) are the defending GNAC champions. They have never lost to the Yellowjackets in nine all-time meetings.
Billings (3-1-1) suffered its first loss and allowed multiple goals for the only time this season.
Neither team attempted a shot until the 22nd minute when
Brittany Langdon (Irvine, Calif.) headed in a
Kendall Thoreson (Seattle, Wash./King's HS) corner kick for her first goal of the season. Langdon was near the right post and directed the ball into the left side netting at 21:35.
Just over seven minutes later freshman
Kellie Zakrzewski (Cheney, Wash./Cheney HS) netted her first collegiate goal with a 35-yard shot on a breakaway. She sprinted to a ball misplayed by a defender at midfield and broke free before slipping a low drive from 17 yards outside the box past the charging goalkeeper Jordan Fenwick. The ball carried into the right side of the goal at 28:45.
SPU nearly made it 3-0 just before halftime, but
Savanna Hanson's header of a corner kick was cleared off the line at the left post by the Yellowjackets Jennifer Brookshire.
The Falcons were successful on their first second-half shot at 87:35. Junior
Kelsey Jenkins (Kent, Wash./Kentwood HS) nailed a 12-yard strike from the center of the box off a cross from junior
Brandi Hamre (Bremerton, Wash./Central Kitsap HS).
SPU senior goalkeeper
Maddie Dickinson (Vancouver, Wash./Skyview HS) made four saves to blank her fourth opponent. She now has 23 career shutouts, drawing within two of the school record of 25 established by Jennifer Hull from 2001-04.
Both teams attempted six shots.
Fenwick was replaced in goal at halftime by Sabrina Grandke-Bawab. Neither of them was credited with a save.
The SPU women embark on a three-game road trip, beginning Saturday in Nampa, Idaho. They play Northwest Nazarene at 11 a.m. Pacific Time.
