NAMPA, Idaho – Seattle Pacific discovered two new sources of scoring this week.
Brittany Langdon and
Kellie Zakrzewski both scored a goal for the second straight game, leading the 19th-ranked SPU women to a 2-0 Great Northwest Athletic Conference victory over Northwest Nazarene on Saturday at NNU Soccer Field.
Those were the first goals of the season for that duo of underclassmen. Entering the week, all of the Falcons scoring had been done by just four players.
“We're starting to spread the scoring around. I would like to get more people on the scoring chart,” Sekyra said. “It bodes well for us that different people are scoring goals and it's hard to defend more than just one or two players.”
The defending GNAC champion Falcons (5-0-1) improved to 2-0 in league play with their second straight shutout. They blanked Montana State Billings 3-0 at home on Thursday.
SPU registered shutouts in five of its six games this season, enabling senior goalkeeper
Maddie Dickinson (Vancouver, Wash./Skyview HS) to increase her career total to 24. She needs one more shutout to tie the school record of 25 established by Jennifer Hull from 2001-04.
The Crusaders (3-3) evened their conference record at 1-1.
As she did Thursday, Langdon (Irvine, Calif.) opened the scoring with the lone first-half goal. The sophomore midfielder received a through pass from defender
Andrea Chan (Vancouver, Wash./Central Catholic HS, Ore.) and chipped a 25-yard shot over onrushing NNU goalkeeper Tanya Zickefoose at 25:06.
Zakrzewski (Cheney, Wash./Cheney HS), a freshman forward, netted her second collegiate goal five minutes into the second half. She collected a pass from
Brandi Hamre (Bremerton, Wash./Central Kitsap HS) in the box and slipped a low 15-yard shot past Zickefoose and inside the left post at 49:58.
Hamre leads the Falcons with three assists this season, matching her team-high total of three goals.
Dickinson stopped four shots for the Falcons. Despite the fact she wasn't severely tested Saturday, Sekyra says Dickinson is playing superbly.
“She didn't have to make any great saves, but she is just so great off her line and reads the game so well. She is so great at coming out and making decisions right now.
“Maddie just takes away anything that might be developing from the other team. Any ideas they have or something that could end up being dangerous she just snaps up.”
Zickefoose had six saves for NNU, which was outshot by a 10-6 margin.
The SPU women remain on the road next week, playing Thursday, Sept. 23 at Saint Martin's and Saturday, Sept. 25 at Western Oregon.
