Sleight Sets Pace for SPU at Saint Martin's

Falcon Junior Earns Spot in Top 25; Team Runs to 6th-Place Finish

LACEY, Wash. – Nate Sleight ran to a 24th-place finish, leading the Seattle Pacific men to sixth in the team standings at the Saint Martin's Invitational cross country meet on Saturday morning.

SPU junior Sleight (Bellevue, Wash./Bellevue Christian HS) finished the 8-kilometer course at Saint Martin's University in 28 minutes 24 seconds. Seattle Pacific wound up with 158 points in a meet won by Western Washington with 31.

While Sleight was well out in front for SPU, the next four Falcons bunched together within 47 seconds behind him to complete the scoring. Sophomore Nate Seely (Lynden, Wash./Lynden HS) was 47th in 29:30; senior Jordan Lance (Mill Creek, Wash./Jackson HS) placed 54th in 29:58; freshman Andrew Rae (St. Helens, Ore.) was 59th in 30:16; and freshman Stephen York (Newberg, Ore.) took 60th in 30:17.

In the women's race, Krysta Carrick cracked the top 20, leading the Seattle Pacific to a fifth-place finish.

Falcons sophomore Carrick (Tokyo, Japan) completed the 6-kilometer course in 24 minutes, 33 seconds, good for 20th place.

SPU finished fifth among the seven teams, totaling 123 points. Western Washington, led by individual winner Sarah Porter, took the title with 29 points.

The next three Falcon runners finished within 20 seconds of each other. Sophomore Kelsey Brown (Colorado Springs, Colo.) was 38th in 25:52; sophomore Laura Moser (Sequim, Wash./Sequim HS) was 39th in 25:53; and Josie Becker was 40th in 26:12.

The Falcons head to Salem, Ore., next weekend for the Charles Bowles Invitational at Bush's Pasture Park adjacent to Willamette University. The meet traditionally features teams from all three NCAA Divisions not only in the Northwest, but also from along the West Coast, as well as some NAIA schools.
