MONMOUTH, Ore. – On a day that goalkeeper
Maddie Dickinson tied the Seattle Pacific shutout record, midfielder
Hannah Masson's scoring spree stole the show.
Masson tallied three goals and assisted on another and Dickinson tied the school record with her 25th career shutout Saturday as the eighth-ranked SPU women routed Western Oregon 6-0 at WOU Soccer Field.
“It was a very complete game. We got the shutout, defended well and attacked with numbers, getting forward more than we ever have,” SPU coach
Chuck Sekyra said. “We had all kinds of people in the box and it was fun to see us attack that way. Every goal was quality.”
The defending Great Northwest Athletic Conference champion Falcons (7-0-1) will bring a perfect 4-0 league record into their home clash with No. 20 Western Washington on Thursday at Interbay Stadium.
Dickinson (Vancouver, Wash./Skyview HS) saved four shots en route to her sixth shutout of the season. The senior shot-stopper tied the SPU record of 25 career shutouts established by Jennifer Hull, who played from 2001-04.
“Maddie has been a fantastic goalkeeper for us. It's fitting that she tied the record of a player like Jen Hull, who had such a great career at SPU,” Sekyra said. “The good thing is that we should have many more shutouts ahead of us this season for Maddie.”
Saturday's hat trick was the first as a collegian for Masson (Meridian, Idaho), who assisted on the opening goal. She chipped a cross to sophomore
Kendall Thoreson (Seattle, Wash./King's HS) who volleyed in a 16-yard shot at 29:48. That was the third goal of the season for Thoreson, who joined the Falcons this year after playing one season at Northwestern.
After sophomore
Megan Lindsay (Spokane, Wash./Gonzaga Prep) slotted a shot past Wolves goalkeeper Kelsie Blachly on a breakaway at 30:07, Masson started her scoring spree.
She tapped in a centering pass from Lindsay at 33:50. Masson netted the Falcons fifth goal at 79:29, receiving a pass from
Kellie Zakrzewski (Cheney, Wash./Cheney HS) at the corner of the box before launching a strike that curved around the goalkeeper and into the far netting.
Masson secured the hat trick at 80:35 with a back post header off an outstanding pass from junior
Mandy Verdoia (Salt Lake City, Utah) who had eluded several defenders before serving the cross.
Sophomore defender
Taylor Sawyer (Gig Harbor, Wash./North Mason HS) scored SPU's fourth goal at 44:47, just minutes after entering the game. She headed a corner kick from Thoreson into the upper corner.
Western Oregon (1-7-0) dropped to 0-4 in conference games.
Blachly had five saves for the Wolves, who were outshot by a 13-6 margin.
The Falcons host Western Washington at 7 p.m. on Thursday in a clash of GNAC leaders.
“It will be fun,” Sekyra said of the Falcons next contest. “It's the perfect timing for a big game. We're finally at home after playing six of our first eight games on the road, and we are healthy.”
