HONOLULU, Hawaii – Junior forward
Brandi Hamre scored from point-blank range in the 22nd minute Monday, lifting the 17th-ranked Seattle Pacific women to a 1-0 non-conference victory over Hawaii Hilo at the Waipio Soccer Complex.
The win came in the first outing of a three-game Hawaii road trip for the Falcons (2-0), who meet BYU-Hawaii on Wednesday and Hawaii Pacific on Saturday.
The Vulcans (1-1-1) suffered their first loss of the season.
“I'm really proud of my team because we have a lot of injuries. We had some kids step up who knew they had to play 90 minutes and did a heck of a job for us,” exclaimed SPU coach
Chuck Sekyra.
“We played good soccer and created enough chances to score five or six goals. We played against a team that was very scrappy and physical and our kids kept their wits about them.”
Despite numerous opportunities, Hamre's was the only shot that found the mark. She was in the middle of the box when a header from teammate
Savanna Hanson (Centennial, Colo.) caromed off a defender. Hamre beat Vulcans goalkeeper Krysta Jenkins to the ball and poked it into the net from four yards out.
That was the third goal of the young season for Hamre (Bremerton, Wash./Central Kitsap HS), only one shy of her entire 2009 season total.
“
Brandi Hamre has gotten off to a start that we knew she would. She is our go-to player and she wants the ball,” said Sekyra. “She is a great finisher and is playing with a ton of confidence right now.
“She is somebody who we always felt like we could go to for big goals and she's proved that already this year. She's going to have a huge year.”
SPU's senior goalkeeper
Maddie Dickinson (Vancouver, Wash./Skyview HS) was not required to make a save en route to her second shutout. She blanked Humboldt State 3-0 in the season opener on Saturday.
Dickinson has 21 career clean sheets, just four behind the school's all-time leader Jennifer Hull who shut out 25 opponents from 2001-04.
But SPU's stellar goalkeeper did not do it alone Monday. In fact Falcons defenders
Andrea Chan,
Mackenzie Laird,
Becca Woods and
Janie Wurth kept the ball away from the goal all night.
“Our back line was amazing today, just great,” said Sekyra. “They gave up nothing. Chan and Becca and Janie and
Mackenzie Laird were awesome.”
Krysta Jenkins registered four saves for Hilo, which was outshot by a lopsided 18-3 margin.
