SEATTLE – Christopher Morris will just have to hope that somewhere out there is a highlight film of Thursday night's NCAA men's soccer playoff game between Seattle Pacific and Cal State Dominguez Hills.

That's because he made the highlight – but never got to see it.

Morris headed in a long free kick from Evan Robicheau just 1:19 into sudden-death overtime, lifting the 13th-ranked Falcons to a 2-1 victory against Dominguez Hills in the first round of the Division II West Regional tournament.

The goal for junior midfielder Morris (Mercer Island, Wash./Mercer Island HS) was his first of the year and the third of his career. That it happened in overtime became necessary after the Toros (12-6-2) tallied the equalizer with just four seconds left in regulation.

“We knew we were up 1-0 (at halftime), and we had to play one more half,” Morris said. “We were just excited to finish it out. It took a little bit longer, but we're just excited.”

The victory at Interbay Stadium sets up the regional final between the Falcons (14-3-2) and Cal State Los Angeles (14-1-6) on Saturday night at 7, also at Interbay. Earlier Thursday, the Golden Eagles came from 2-0 down in the second half salvage a 2-2 double-overtime tie against Chico State, then won the penalty kick shootout, 4-1.

Seattle Pacific celebrates Thursday's victory against Cal State Dominguez Hills.
Falcons freshman defender Robicheau (Puyallup, Wash./Puyallup HS) set up his free kick about 35 yards up from the goal line on the right side of the field. He floated the ball toward the far post, and Morris went up about five yards in front of the net and sent a header just inside the post and into the upper left corner.

“He whipped it in there, and the goalkeeper was aggressive coming off his line,” said Morris, who also set up a goal by Jon Pearman early in the game. “We knew he was coming. I just flicked it.

“I didn't actually see it go in the goal,” he added. “I started running away.”

SPU head coach Mark Collings saw the ball go in, though – which left him feeling much better than he had been just a few minutes earlier after Jordan Rover's close-range shot in the penalty area found the back of the net to bring the Toros into a 1-1 tie and bring on overtime.

“Coming into the game, we felt like set pieces were a place where maybe we could exploit them a little bit,” Collings said. “We worked on set pieces the last couple days. It was a great service by Evan, and what a header by Morris – he couldn't have finished it any better.

“I'm speechless – this team just continues to amaze me with our ability to bounce back after adversity,” Collings added.

Seattle Pacific took a 1-0 lead when Pearman – named earlier this week as the Great Northwest Athletic Conference's Defender of the Year -- ripped in a 15-yard shot from inside right of the penalty area into the back left corner just 8:45 into the game. That was the second goal of the year for Pearman (Glendale, Ariz.).

Dominguez Hills controlled a good chunk of the first half after that, having a 6-3 advantage in shots by halftime. But SPU came out as the aggressors after the intermission and had the run of play for much of the second 45 minutes.

In addition to being the Falcons' first playoff game since 2006, it was their first postseason victory since 2005 when they beat Sonoma State in the first round, 2-0. It also snapped an eight-game losing streak against Cal State Dominguez Hills. SPU's last victory against the Toros was 2-1 on Oct. 5, 2002 in Seattle.
