Box score, play-by-play
SAN FRANCISCO – Rebound the basketball. Then, take care of it.
Neither of those things went very well for Seattle Pacific on Friday afternoon.
Sophomore starting guard
Aubree Callen pumped in a career-high 17 points, but 13
th-ranked UC San Diego went on a 15-point scoring run midway through the second half and pulled away from the Falcons to a 68-47 victory on the first day of the CCAA-GNAC Challenge women's basketball tournament.
Seattle Pacific will try to break into the win column when it returns to action on Saturday at 3 p.m. against San Francisco State. That game will be played at Cal State East Bay in Hayward because of a wrestling tournament in the Gators' gym.
Callen (Jerome, Idaho) topped her previous career high of 12, which she set on Jan. 29 at Alaska Fairbanks. She hit 7 of 10 from the floor (including 1 of 2 from behind the 3-point arc) and drained both of her free throws in the regular-season opener at The Swamp on the campus of San Francisco State University.
“She gave us a boost several times that kind of lit us up,” SPU coach
Julie Heisey said. “She was very good tonight, and she wasn't afraid to shoot.”
But the Falcons were hurt by 26 turnovers on Friday, which the Tritons converted into 24 points. UC San Diego got another 12 points on second-chance opportunities, thanks in part to a 43-27 advantage on the boards.
“I knew we were going to have match-up problems just because of their guard quickness,” Heisey said. “Because they're very good, we have to make sure we can control the things we can control, like rebounds and turnovers.”
Sophomore forward
Katie Benson (Snohomish, Wash./Snohomish HS) added 14 points for the Falcons (0-1). No one else had more than six.
Lauren Freidenberg led UC San Diego (1-0) with 19 points and nine rebounds, and Chelsea Carlisle was close behind with 17 points and eight boards.
The Falcons had an early five-point lead at 14-9, but UC San Diego gradually moved in front and took a 31-20 advantage into halftime.
SPU came out firing at the outset of the second half, hitting four of its first six shots, including back-to-back lay-ups by junior forward
Rachel Murray (Eglington, Australia), to cut the Tritons' lead to 31-28.
Callen's only 3-pointer of the game brought the Falcons within 39-33 at the 13:59 mark. But Seattle Pacific then went scoreless for the next 6 minutes, 20 seconds, during which time UC San Diego ran off its 15 consecutive points. That made it 54-33 with 7:39 to play and effectively put the game out of reach.
“I thought we started each half well,” Heisey said. “We came out strong in the second half and got within three, then we got in some foul trouble. They got some offensive rebounds, and it spiraled from there.”
Many of SPU's turnovers were due in part to UC San Diego's pressure defense.
“They're so aggressive on the ball. We hadn't experienced this kind of pressure,” Heisey said. “We got off to a good start, then we had an offensive foul and kind of sputtered. That gave them an opportunity to do some things, they got confidence, and we got caught up in their pressure.”
The loss snapped an SPU 12-game winning streak in season-opening games. The Falcons are now 28-9 all-time in openers.
