SEATTLE -- Kristin Schramm led all scorers with 20 points for Western Washington, which took control early Saturday en route to a 70-53 women's basketball win over Sonoma State in the last day of the GNAC/CCAA Challenge at Brougham Pavilion.

The Vikings (5-3) gained a split of their two tournament games after losing 66-63 to Chico State on Friday. Schramm scored just two points in that contest. On Saturday she made 7 of 16 shots from the field and led WWU's 48-40 rebounding advantage with eight boards.

Katie Colard scored 12 points and Corinn Waltrip added 11 for the Vikings, who shot 47 percent (27 of 57) from the floor while holding SSU at 25 percent (18 of 71).

Sonoma (2-4) lost both games in the tournament, including Friday's 83-65 setback against host Seattle Pacific.

Tori Carroll scored 12 points to pace the Seawolves, who also got 10 from Travis Newman.

After Sonoma claimed its only lead at 3-2 on a 3-pointer by Newman, Western reeled off 12 consecutive points. Five different players scored during the surge, capped by a Sarah Hill layup that gave WWU a 14-3 advantage with 14:58 left in the first half.

The Vikings later staged and 11-point run, fueled by 3-pointers from Colard, Erika Ramstead and Erin Feeney, to go ahead 33-15 with 5:18 on the clock. They sustained that 18-point margin at halftime with a 40-22 lead.

The Seawolves trimmed the deficit to 12 points on four occasions in the second half, but each time WWU responded with a basket.

Western increased its lead to as many as 22 points before SSU closed the game with a 9-4 run, including four points from Newman, to set the final 17-point differential.

SPU and Chico State meet in the nightcap Saturday, the championship game of GNAC/CCAA Challenge.

Chico State and Sonoma State are members of the California Collegiate Athletic Association while Western Washington and Seattle Pacific compete in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference.
