BURNABY, B.C. –
Megan Lindsay and
Taylor Sawyer each scored their first goal of the season on Saturday night, leading Seattle Pacific to a 2-0 Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's soccer victory against Simon Fraser.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Natalie Harold (Vancouver, Wash./Heritage HS) posted her third straight shutout for the Falcons (5-1-0, 2-0-0 GNAC). She came up with two saves on just six total shots by Simon Fraser (1-3-0, 0-2-0).
"This is not an easy place to play and I'm proud that we kept the ball, got a shutout and put away a good opponent," said Falcons coach
Chuck Sekyra. "We are going in a very good direction right now."
SPU has reeled off four consecutive wins, keeping opponents off the board for the past 295 minutes, 54 seconds, dating back to a 6-1 home rout of Notre Dame de Namur on Sept. 8.
Junior forward Lindsay (Spokane, Wash./Gonzaga Prep HS) snapped a scoreless tie less than four minutes into the second half when she found the goal with an unassisted strike for the 18th goal of her career.
Junior defender Sawyer (Gig Harbor, Wash./North Mason HS) padded the lead to 2-0 midway through the 61st minute, scoring for the fifth time in her SPU career. That goal also was unassisted.
The Falcons more than doubled the Clan's six-shot total, finishing with 15. Of those, 12 were on frame: the two that went in, seven that were saved by Simon Fraser goalkeeper Amelia Ng, and three more that were cleared away by Clan defensive players.
The SPU women, who won 1-0 at Western Washington on Thursday, are alone atop the GNAC standings in pursuit of their third straight league championship. They compiled six points as the only team to win their opening two conference contests.
Montana State Billings and Western Oregon are tied for second place with four points apiece, on a win and tie. Everyone else has at least one loss on their league ledger.
SPU returns to action on Thursday, Sept. 22 against Saint Martin's. Kick-off is 7 p.m. at Interbay Stadium to start a four-game homestand.
