SEATTLE – For
Nate Johnson, it was a first.
For the Seattle Pacific Falcons – specifically, for their indoor track and field multi-event specialists – it was a second.
All in less than 24 hours.
Johnson, thanks to a solid personal-best run in the meet-ending 1,000 meters, put himself onto the NCAA provisional qualifying list for the men's heptathlon on Saturday, piling up 4,679 points on the final day of the UW Invitational.
The total for SPU junior Johnson (Boise, Idaho) at Dempsey Indoor on the University of Washington campus pushed him past the Division II minimum total of 4,600 points. He topped his previous best by more than 100 points (4,576 in winning the Great Northwest Athletic Conference championship last February) and wound up in seventh place among the 14 heptathletes who finished the meet (two others did not finish).
Johnson's performance gave the Falcons their second NCAA provisional multi-event qualifier of the weekend. On Friday, senior Ali Worthen (Coos Bay, Ore.) piled up 3,729 points in the women's pentathlon.
Johnson ranks No. 15 on the national D-2 heptathlon list pending the outcome of other meets around the country this weekend. Worthen ranks No. 3 on the pentathlon list.
“It's exciting to have finally hit that mark after three years,” Johnson said. “I really feel like I under-performed this weekend – starting with two PRs (on Friday) was great, but between the long jump and the 1,000, I had a pretty average meet at best. So I'm excited to get some good training in over the next month, and then go and try to bump up my score a little bit and move up the national list.”
Seattle Pacific junior
Nate Seely already was an NCAA provisional qualifier in the 800 meters. Now, he's even farther up those rankings after yet another personal-best performance on Saturday.
Seely, battling with Ryan Hansen of GNAC rival Western Oregon, came across the line in 1 minute, 52.26 seconds. That was a sizable 1.34 seconds faster than the 1:53.60 he ran on the same track at the UW Indoor Preview on Jan. 14. Coming into the season, his PR was 1:54.35.
Johnson started Saturday with 2,541 points from Friday's first four events of the heptathlon. That included PRs in his first two events of the day: 7.42 seconds in the 60-meter dash, and 20 feet, 9 ¼ inches in the long jump – the first time he had broken 20 feet indoors.
That left him needing 1,059 points to seal the provisional deal on Saturday. Johnson picked up 709 with 9.17-second run in the 60-meter hurdles (good for ninth place), and another 645 by clearing 13-5 ¼ in the pole vault, which gave him fifth place.
Just 605 points away from getting past the provisional minimum. Johnson got that and more – 784 – with his time of 2:48.22 in the meet-ending 1,000. That easily beat his previous best of 2:53.69, giving him three personal records in the seven events, along with his best-ever total. His 1,000 time earned fifth place, matching his pole vault position as the best of the weekend.
Former SPU star Chris Randolph, now with the Skechers club team, won the hep on Saturday with 5,480 points. He set the current Falcon record in 2006 with 5,508.
JOHNSON, FRICKER COME CLOSE TO PROVISIONAL
Falcons freshman Jasmine Johnson (Federal Way, Wash./Federal Way HS) and sophomore McKayla Fricker (Canby, Ore.) came within a stride of making the NCAA provisional standard in the 800 meters.
Johnson, running in the third heat, logged a 2:16.32. That was 4.3 seconds better than her inaugural college time of 2:20.62 on Jan. 14 at Dempsey.
Competing in the next heat, Fricker came through the wire in 2:16.34. That beat her previous career best of 2:16.96 from last year, and was more than two seconds faster than her first 2012 time of 2:18.51 two weeks ago.
The time to beat for NCAA provisional is 2:15.90. Both will have additional chances to do so, with the next meets scheduled for Feb. 10-11 (Husky Classic) and Feb. 12 (UW Indoor Open) prior to the GNAC Championships on Feb. 18-19 in Nampa, Idaho.
Both women made the GNAC automatic list with their respective times. Other Falcons getting onto the GNAC automatic list on Saturday for the first time this season in their respective events were sophomore Kishia Mitchell (Puyallup, Wash./Rogers HS) in the women's 400 (58.30), junior Emily Quatier (Portland, Ore.) in the 400 (58.57), and senior Brittany Aanstad in the women's high jump (5-3 ¼).
