SEATTLE – Austin Curtis tallied two second-half goals on Thursday for the Western Washington men, who posted a 3-1 Great Northwest Athletic Conference soccer win over 11th-ranked Seattle Pacific at Interbay Stadium.
The Falcons (10-2-4) sustained just their second setback of the season and dropped to 6-2-4 in league play.
Western (7-7-2) avenged a 1-0 home loss to SPU on Sept. 29. The Vikings evened their GNAC record at 5-5-2.
WWU's Jake Jorgensen got the lone first-half goal at 21:50. Sujinda Dangvan drove a 20-yard free kick into the box that deflected to Jorgensen in the center of the box. He directed an eight-yard header inside the left post for his first goal of the season.
Another deflection went the Vikings way at 59:38 when Andrew Weishaar's shot was blocked by SPU goalkeeper
Zach Johnson. Curtis collected the carom and deposited the ball to the left side of the goal from five yards away.
Curtis struck again just over 10 minutes later for his second goal of the year. He broke free into the box on the dribble and got past Johnson before slipping a 10-yarder into the right side-netting at 69:43.
The Falcons avoided the shutout at 76:58 when
Ian Adams (Shoreline, Wash./Shorecrest HS) booted the ball in during a goalmouth scramble for the fourth score of his freshman season.
Corey McGuire (Vancouver, Wash./Columbia River HS) was credited with an assist.
Johnson (Snohomish, Wash./Snohomish HS) stopped six shots for SPU.
Goalkeeper Keegan Rogers made four saves for the Vikings, who were outshot 18-14.
The Falcons remain in Seattle to host third-ranked Simon Fraser on Saturday. Kick-off is 7 p.m. at Interbay Stadium.
