BELLINGHAM, Wash. –
Heather Young scored early in the 20th minute on Saturday, ending Western Washington's shutout streak of more than 900 minutes, and that was all the 21st-ranked Seattle Pacific Falcons needed to beat the No. 14-ranked Vikings at Orca Field in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference regular-season finale, 1-0.
The goal by sophomore forward Young (Lacombe, Alberta) was her fifth of the season. It was set up by sophomore defender Riley Doipps (Port Orchard, Wash. / South Kitsap HS) and came at the 19:14 mark. Young's shot came from the right side, hit the far post, and went into the net.
That was the first goal allowed by the Vikings in 919 minutes, 29 seconds, dating back to Sept 19, when SPU's
Kaylie Winston scored on a header with 15 seconds left to give the Falcons a 2-1 victory at Interbay Stadium.
Junior goalkeeper
Natalie Harold (Vancouver, Wash. / Heritage HS) made five saves to earn the shutout, her third of the season. Western outshot the Falcons, 15-9.
SPU (14-2-2, 11-1-2 GNAC) now has won eight straight games, outscoring the opposition, 19-4. The Falcons are unbeaten in their last 12 games (10-0-2).
Seattle Pacific finished second in the final standings and now will take part in the inaugural GNAC Tournament this coming week at Starfire Stadium in Tukwila. The Falcons will face third-seeded Montana State Billings in the 8 p.m. semimfinal on Thursday. The first semi will pit Western Washington against fourth-seeded Western Oregon at 5 p.m.
