SEATTLE – John Hodnett's golden goal in the seventh minute of overtime Saturday lifted third-ranked Simon Fraser to a 1-0 win over No. 11 Seattle Pacific in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference men's soccer game at Interbay Stadium.

The Falcons (10-3-4) suffered back-to-back setbacks for the first time this season following Thursday's 3-1 home loss against Western Washington. They fell to 6-3-4 in league play.

GNAC champion Simon Fraser (15-1-1) improved its conference record to 11-1-1. The Clan swept the season series from SPU, including a 5-1 decision on Sept. 27 in Burnaby, B.C.

Simon Fraser took advantage of a Falcons turnover with an immediate counter-attack. Ryan Dhillon set up the winning goal with a pass along the end line from the left side of the box. Hodnett was in the goalmouth near the left post and tapped it in from three yards away at 96:33. That was his sixth goal of the season, but his first game-winner.

Hodnett's successful attempt leveled the overall shot count at 13-13.

“It was an even game, nothing short of what you would expect from these two teams,” said SPU coach Mark Collings. “Simon Fraser is very good, make no doubt about it. I thought we were good tonight too. We made a mistake there at the end and they were able to capitalize on it.”

Despite not stopping a shot, Jd Blakely recorded his third shutout and the team's eighth.

Senior goalkeeper Zach Johnson (Snohomish, Wash./Snohomish HS) had four outstanding saves for the Falcons.

He repelled back-to-back second-half shots, both of them with diving saves to his right to deflect balls around the left post. Johnson denied SFU's Justin Wallace at 60:11 and did the same to Carlo Basso at 61:57.

“Zach made some great saves. He was really sharp,” Collings said. “In my opinion Zach is one of the best keepers in America and he showed it tonight. He makes big saves when we need it and he's just stable back there for us.

“It gives our team a lot of confidence to know that he's able to clean things us for us back there. He's been really, really good all year. Hopefully we can start helping him out by putting some balls in the back of the net at the other end.”

SPU's most dangerous chance came in the 24th minute when Anthony Mohammed fired a shot from the six-yard box that was cleared off the line by a Clan defender.

“We had a couple chances early,” said Collings. “The one ball that was sitting right there on the goal line that we couldn't knock in and a couple through balls that their keeper came out and did well with.”

The Falcons close out their regular-season schedule on Saturday against Saint Martin's. Kick-off is 7 p.m. at Interbay Stadium. A brief ceremony will be conducted prior to the game to honor SPU's 10 seniors.
