SEATTLE – The reaction to Coach Chuck Sekyra's halftime speech was almost immediate.

His Seattle Pacific women's soccer team scored on the first shot after intermission and continued to dominate throughout the second half Saturday to claim a 2-0 victory over Simon Fraser in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference game at Interbay Stadium.

“It makes you feel good as a coach that they responded well,” Sekyra said. “That's very nice to see and that's the kind of women they are. I just wish we could start the game off that way.”

Sekyra admitted the halftime adjustments were more of a mental nature than technical.

“We just needed to be more engaged, get on the same page together and just give each other quicker options off the ball. We needed to be more assertive to win the ball back just to take the other team's space and time off the ball away.”

Leading scorers Ali Martin and Megan Lindsay each netted a second-half goal to propel the Falcons to their third consecutive victory. SPU (8-2-2) improved to 5-1-2 in league action and is undefeated in its last seven outings with five wins and two ties

The Clan (1-10-0) remained winless in eight GNAC games. SFU battled the Falcons to a scoreless first half despite a 4-1 shot disparity.

But SPU got on the board just 1:06 into the second half on Martin's (Beaverton, Ore.) team-high fifth goal.

Lindsay gathered the ball near the box and passed to Riley Dopps (Port Orchard, Wash./South Kitsap HS) on the left side. Dopps sent a cross to the right that Martin headed back into the left side of the goal from eight yards away at 46:06.

“He got us motivated. We definitely needed it,” Martin described of Sekyra's lecture. “It was not a fun halftime, but it was what we needed. We need to be able to get to that place without him.”

Lindsay (Spokane, Wash./Gonzaga Prep) moved back into a tie for the team's scoring lead with an unassisted 77th-minute strike. The senior forward dribbled through traffic from the left flank into the box before unleashing a 16-yard blast to the lower right corner.

That was Lindsay's fifth goal of the season and the 34th of her career, a figure that ranks No. 3 among all-time SPU scorers.

Sophomore goalkeeper Alexa Hughes (Everett, Wash./Archbishop Murphy) started for the second time as a Falcon and registered her first shutout. The transfer from Marshall was not called upon to make a save as Simon Fraser managed just one shot in each half, neither of them directly on goal.

Amanda Gilliland recorded five saves for the Clan. She faced 13 shots in the second half.

SPU stopped a school-record streak that saw them play four straight overtime contests. No previous team had more than two consecutive games go into extra periods.

“That's one thing we said at halftime, 'We're not playing another overtime game.' So it was really good to get this one done in 90 minutes,” Martin said.

The Falcons are home for two games next week. They host Northwest Nazarene on Thursday at 7 p.m. before entertaining Montana State Billings on Saturday at 1 p.m. Both games will be played at Interbay Stadium.
