SEATTLE – Senior Jobi Wall tallied 10 of his 14 points during the first half Friday as Seattle Pacific took control early en route to a 72-48 men's basketball exhibition win over Pacific Lutheran at Brougham Pavilion.

The Falcons, ranked No. 9 in the NCAA Division II preseason coaches poll, drew a split of their two tune-up games. They lost 77-71 at Division I Idaho on Oct. 27.

Wall (Arvada, Colo.) was one of five double-figure scorers for SPU, which also got 10 from David Downs and 12 apiece from Patrick Simon, Andy Poling and Cory Hutsen.

A 6-foot-6 forward, Wall also contributed five rebounds and four assists. He shot 6-for-12 from the field.

“He's our captain. He's the leader of our team,” said fourth-year SPU coach Ryan Looney. “More importantly than his production, he gave us great energy. We need that to continue to happen from him.”

A 42-24 rebounding advantage that included 25 offensive boards, helped the Falcons accumulate 24 second-chance points to just seven for PLU. Simon (Ephrata, Wash./Ephrata HS), who transferred from Washington State prior to this season, and Riley Stockton (Spokane, Wash./Ferris HS) each grabbed eight to tie for top rebounding honors.

“Especially early on, our offensive rebounding effort was really good,” Looney said. “That's a huge emphasis for us, to try to get as many of our misses back as possible.”

A Division III competitor, Pacific Lutheran was led by the 15 points of Drew Earnest. He made 4 of 5 shots from 3-point range. Cameron Schilling added 10 points for the Lutes, who were limited to 33-percent shooting from the floor (16 of 49).

SPU countered with 46-percent field goal accuracy (25 of 54).

The Falcons scored the game's first five points, but PLU drew even at 7-7 on a layup by Cole Parker with 16:09 left in the first half. SPU took control soon after that with an 11-point run that netted a 21-8 advantage. Starting the surge was a 3-pointer from Wall, who capped it with a put-back shot at 8:36.

Hutsen (Sammamish, Wash./Skyline HS) scored back-to-back baskets on a layup and hook shot to account for the final points of the half and extend the lead to 35-19.

The largest margin after halftime was 24 points, accomplished the last time when freshman Brendan Carroll's jumper with 43 seconds remaining forged the final score.

So how does Looney feel about his team's progress through the lens of two recently completed exhibition contests?

“We feel like our team has depth. In our two exhibitions we didn't necessarily want to focus on winning or losing. We wanted to give everybody an opportunity in a game-type environment to see what they can provide for us this year.

“Now that we can go back, watch film and break everything down we'll have a better feel for what we've going to get from our guys on game night.”

The Falcons open the regular season at home next weekend with the two-day Sodexo Tip-Off Classic. They play Academy of Art on Friday and Azusa Pacific on Saturday. Both games start at 7 p.m. as the nightcap of four games. The SPU women play at 5 p.m. both nights.
