Box score, play-by-play
SEATTLE – They remembered what happened last time they went up against these same two women's basketball opponents. So the Seattle Pacific Falcons made sure it didn't happen again.
Suzanna Ohlsen scored a career-high 20 points and hit all four of her 3-point shots on Saturday night, leading SPU to a 65-48 Great Northwest Athletic Conference victory against Central Washington in Brougham Pavilion.
Senior guard
Rachel Murray (Eglington, Australia) added 12 points for the Falcons, who now have won their first two conference games. They are 5-1 overall for the first since the 2008-09 campaign.
“To start off 2-0 is big, because last year, we lost this stretch (to NNU and Central on the road) in February,” Falcons head coach
Julie Heisey said. “Our kids have done things really well. We out-rebounded both of them, which is a big deal, and we held both of them below their field goal percentage. Central is a good-shooting team, so for them to shoot just 32 percent tonight is big.”
The Falcons head to California next week for the CCAA-GNAC Challenge, the final non-conference tournament of the year. SPU plays Sonoma State on Friday at 5:30 p.m. and Chico State on Saturday night at 7:30.
With her 20 points, sophomore guard Ohlsen (Monroe, Wash. / Monroe HS) beat her previous high of 19, which she set in an 86-67 loss to then-No. 8 UC San Diego on Nov. 16. On Saturday, Ohlsen was 6 of 9 overall from the field, and also hit all four of her free throws. She tied her career high with five assists and did not commit any turnovers.
“I've seen huge improvement in her poise and in her ability to lead the team. And tonight, I saw some good things defensively,” Heisey said. “Suzanna is kind of a model of our whole team in that our whole team is young and there are so many things where we can continue to grow.”
Seattle Pacific trailed just three times all night, the last time at 12-10 with 9:20 left in the first half. But from there, the Falcons ran off 12 straight points to take a 22-12 lead, and stretched that to 29-18 by halftime. The closest Central (3-4, 0-2 GNAC) came after that was 29-20 on the initial basket of the second half. SPU answered with eight points in a row and led by double digits the rest of the way.
Jessica VanDyke topped the Wildcats with 11 points. Ally Schmitt, Central Washington's leading scorer at 13 points per game, finished with only four as the Falcons limited her to just five shots from the field, and one free throw attempt. (She was averaging seven free throw tries per game.)
It was the Wildcats' lowest-scoring game of the season.
“(VanDyke) had a lot of points, but Aubree (Callen) and Brooke (Bowen) and some other people tag-teaming on defense did a super job in not giving her the same open shots she has had in the past,” Heisey said.
Freshman guard Bowen (Vancouver, Wash. / Skyview HS) grabbed a career-high eight rebounds for Seattle Pacific, which had a 38-33 advantage. Bowen's previous career-best on the boards was five, set three times, most recently on Nov. 17 in a 76-74 overtime victory against Azusa Pacific.
As was the case in Thursday's 76-69 GNAC-opening win against Northwest Nazarene, the Falcons got off fewer shots, but hit at a higher percentage. They drained 20 of 45 (44.4 percent), and for the second straight game were at 50 percent from downtown (7 of 14). Central Washington hit just 32.2 percent (19 of 59).
