BELMONT, Calif. – Usually, it takes the better part of a season to deliver a complete-game performance.

But the Seattle Pacific Falcons just might be ahead of schedule.

Aubree Callen pumped in 19 points, with all five of her field goals coming from 3-point range, and three other SPU players hit for double-figures on Tuesday night in a 97-59 non-conference women's basketball rout of Notre Dame de Namur.

After allowing the Argonauts (1-9) the first basket of the night, the Falcons ran off 13 points in a row and never looked back. SPU's lead slipped below double digits just once more at 22-13. An 8-0 surge pushed it back to a 17-point advantage. It grew to as many as 40 late in the game.

Julie Heisey header 2012-13.
“We're always trying to put a 40-minute game together, and we came close tonight,” head coach Julie Heisey said. “We executed very well, and we were able to create some things off of our defense. We were able to get 17 steals, which is the most we've had this year. We had four players in double figures, so we were really balanced.

“I was really happy with our total effort, from top to bottom.”

Junior guard Mechela Barnes (Tacoma, Wash. / Bellarmine Prep HS) and sophomore guard Suzanna Ohlsen (Monroe, Wash. / Monroe HS) added 12 points apiece for the Falcons. Junior forward Katie Benson (Snohomish, Wash. / Snohomish HS) chipped in 11, along with six rebounds.

SPU bounced back from its 89-77 loss on Dec. 8 to now-No. 20 Chico State, and heads into a 13-day break for Christmas with a 7-2 overall record. The last time the Falcons won seven of their first nine was in 2010-11 on the way to a 9-2 start.

“The loss to Chico was disappointing, but you look at the Sonoma State game (a 78-57 victory on Dec. 7), you look at tonight, and we've come back and I think we're executing better,” Heisey said. “We're playing together more, and we're not trying to force things to happen. We're trying to create some things as a team.”

The Falcons hadn't put 90-plus points on the board since last Jan. 12 at home in a 97-79 victory against Central Washington.

SPU returns to action on New Year's Eve afternoon at 2 in Brougham Pavilion against Dixie State to conclude non-conference play.

Of the 13 points during Seattle Pacific's game-opening burst on Tuesday, nine came by converting Argonaut turnovers into 3-pointers: one by Benson, one by Callen, and one by Ohlsen.

Junior guard Callen (Jerome, Idaho) also had eight rebounds, five assists, and two steals. She came within two points of her career scoring high and one of her career rebounding high. All six of her field goal tries were from downtown. She also was 4 of 4 from the foul line, pushing her past 100 makes (now 102) for her career.

“We played team basketball, they kept leaving her open against the zone, and she kept hitting them,” Heisey said of Callen's long-range accuracy.

SPU shot a season-high 53.2 percent (33 of 62). Barnes (5 of 7) and senior guard Rachel Murray (3 of 5) joined Callen at 50 percent-plus field goal shooting.

Seattle Pacific committed just nine turnovers, a season low. The Argonauts of the Pacific West Conference had 21, leading to 32 of the Falcons' points.

Once again, SPU had the rebounding advantage, making it eight out of nine games this season. This time, it was 37-31. The Falcons were especially dominant on the boards during the second half, 22-11.

Maya Arellanes came off the bench to lead Notre Dame de Namur with nine points.
