CHICO, Calif. – Didn't matter who had her hands on the ball. The Seattle Pacific Falcons got something from practically everyone on Friday night.

Freshman guard Brooke Bowen pumped in a career-high 16 points and was one of three SPU players in double figures on Friday night as the Falcons rolled past Sonoma State on the first night of the CCAA-GNAC Challenge, 78-57.

Seattle Pacific won its fourth straight game and is now 6-1 for the first time since the 2008-09 season.

Junior guard Aubree Callen (Jerome, Idaho) added 15 points for the Falcons, and senior guard Rachel Murray (Eglington, Australia) chipped in 13 in the game on the Chico State campus.

A total of 12 Seattle Pacific players saw action. Of those, 10 scored, nine had at least one rebound, and seven earned at least one assist.

“We had a lot of kids who did some really good things,” head coach Julie Heisey said. “We just had a good run with some good balance, and that made us tough to guard.

The Falcons return to action on Saturday against host Chico State at 7:30 p.m. Links to a live audio broadcast and live stats can be found here.

The 16-point output for Bowen (Vancouver, Wash. / Skyview HS) beat her previous best of 10 points, set on Nov. 10 against Western State in her second game as a Falcon. Early on, her shots weren't falling (just 2 of 11), but she wound up hitting her last five of the game to finish at 43.8 percent for the night (7 of 16).

“Brooke is relaxing, and once you hit a couple of shots, it's easier to hit a few more,” Heisey said.

SPU yielded the first four points of the game to Sonoma State (2-4), and was down 6-5 before running off 13 in a row to take an 18-6 lead and never trailed the rest of the night, and in fact led by double digits the rest of the way. The Falcons had a 35-23 lead at halftime, and the closest the Seawolves came after that was 42-31 with 17:17 left in the game. The lead grew to as many as 26.

Seattle Pacific was in complete control of the boards, 53-27, with 17 of those at the offensive end. The last time the Falcons had more than 50 in a game was this past Feb.4 with 55 against Alaska Fairbanks. The Falcons have out-rebounded six of their seven opponents this season.

Junior guard Mechele Barnes (Tacoma, Wash. / Bellarmine Prep HS) led the way with eight rebounds, her most as a Falcon and tying the career high that she set three previous times while at the College of Southern Idaho the past two seasons. Sophomore guard Suzanna Ohlsen set a career high with seven rebounds, and tied her career mark with five assists.

“Rebounding was a huge factor – our kids did a super job on the boards,” Heisey said, “and that led to a lot of second-chance points.

Senior center Erin Stephens (Salem, Ore.) set a career high with five assists, beating her old mark of four set in 2011 while she was a sophomore at Chemeketa Community College.

SPU now has beaten Sonoma State six straight times. Heisey found this one particularly satisfying.

“It was finals week, we had to travel, and we came out and did a good job and beat a good team on the road,” she said.
